Oops, Megara, good call, I stand corrected..One gets the impression that it really wasn't accepted right away. I'm also willing to bet there was lots of voter intimidation. For black people as well. Still, hardly ancient.
That's exactly what I'm trying to say. Why aren't we talking about something that's a modern issue, rather than something that's been made right a long time ago. Women have been able to vote my whole life. They've been able to vote my mother's whole life. They've been able to vote my GRANDMOTHER's whole life. Why are we still discussing the issue? Does that make sense?
But still, fritz. Let's say for the sake of argument that your initial assumption was correct. Let's say that women didn't get to vote until 1972. That STILL makes it an ancient issue that's almost 2 generations old. Now seeing as women have actually been voting since 1920, that makes it a REALLLLLY ancient decision that's at least 3 generations old, almost 4! The last women in my family who couldn't vote was my great-grandmother who was dead many, many years before I was ever born. So like I said, it's a moot point to the modern woman.
This is a bit frustrating. We going to ignore World War Two? Forget about it? Wait for it to happen again. I for one will never forget. Have slaves forgotten? ..Hello! Is this thing on? Sorry...I've got to bail. I'm getting frustrated to distraction. Please don't treat civil rights like the enemy. There are women worldwide having probems. Why shouldn't it be discussed?
I'm not saying forget the history. I'm saying , IT'S ALREADY BEEN FIXED. So why is it being brought up in a discussion of women's rights? That's like talking about racism. A discussion of slavery has NO PLACE in a modern discussion of black rights because it's an OOOOOLD issue that's long been fixed. Not trying to be frustrating....do you see what I'm trying to say? There's no point worrying about something that's said and done with. What are you trying to get at? Are you afraid we're going to lose our right to vote or something? Because that's kind of ridiculous, lol! Why shouldn't it be discussed, you ask? Because we live in AMERICA and in AMERICA women can vote. Maybe women are having problems worldwide. That's not my problem. And I'll be honest...if it doesn't happen in America, I don't care much about it. If women across the world want to vote, they should fight for it like we did and stop whining about it. I live in America, I can vote, end of story.
Things don't stay fixed by themselves. There was much more I posted than just our right to vote. I hope you never feel in life what it's like for someone to blatently violate you rights and get away with it. I hope none of us ever have to be closer to what life was like for women back then. Abortion rights are beggining to come into question more, and more. Women are being denied birth control at the pharmacist because of religious reasons.
I live in America. I care about america. Women in america are pretty darn equal to men. Like I said, I've never once seen a case of blatant discrimination against women. I've seen men discriminated against though. SEVERAL TIMES. My step father was denied custody of his son because of being male. Custody was given to the mother, even though she was an alcoholic and a drug user who repeatedly left the 4yr old child unattended. They wouldn't let my step dad have custody again until he remarried (to my mom.) And he was a good, law abiding citizen and a police officer to boot! In my work place, women are allowed to have long hair and wear earrings. Men aren't. Same went for the school I attended when I was in high school. Women get away with murder in this country. We get to have our cake and eat it too. I'm a jailer. I get paid the exact same wage as my male colleagues. The only difference is that if there's a fight, the males are expected to break it up and not the females. They wouldn't dare make a female officer transport a violent inmate. We get all the fun and the guys get all the hard work. I guess as a child of the 90's, I just don't understand what women are complaining about. We've got it GREAT! We get to do whatever we want and we can still expect the man to pay for dinner and we can still refuse to take the trash out "because's that a man's job,." We've got all the freedom in the world to do just about whatever we want. If a man so much as looks at us funny at work, we can scream sexual harrassment and get him fired. We have it REALLY well off. I'd hate to be a man in today's world, because the deck is stacked against them.
well, i asked this on the first page...and i'll ask again(if i missed someone answering me, sorry). How are men and women unequal under the law? Is there some law protecting men's rights, but not women's? The only law i can think of, off the top of my head, is the draft. Women will probably be added to the selective service next time there is a draft, at least in a limited role...so that's kinda moot, IMO. But what else is there? Socially, there are a lot of double standards....and things that are unfair to both men and women. But what legal issues are there?
How are the laws unequal for men and women concerning rape, abortion, and birth control? and do go on...
Plenty of stories..I guess it's an issue still. abortion... http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr=&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&q=abortion%2B2006&btnG=Search+News rape... http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr=&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&q=rape%2B2006&btnG=Search+News sexual discrimination... (mostly stories about gay rights, though it's still an issue for some women today) http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr=&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&q=sexual+discrimination%2B2006&btnG=Search+News birth control...religion.. http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&lr=&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&q=birth+control%2Breligion%2B2006&btnG=Search+News
I'm sure there are isolated cases in the america of women being treated unequally. In my 23yrs, I've never had to witness it first hand, so it must not be a very big issue.
http://www.outinamerica.com/home/news.asp?articleid=28930 You know, tell her her rights are bullshit. Or that it isn't an issue. Why the fuck would any woman argue against the boundaries set in place to keep these things from being tolerated?
um, i am not gonna scan google for you, sorry. Can you find a story involving rape where the law protects men and women differently? I'm not sure what abortion laws there are for men? so i'm not sure how they could be applied unequally.... and for birth control, i assume you mean some women being denied their prescrips at the pharmacy? Well, i'm not sure what this has to do with men. It is a religious matter, not a gender matter. Regardless, the pill is not illegal and could be obtained elsewhere. Ontop of that, there is other forms of birth control that are available over the counter...so i'm not sure what exactly you are getting at.
i think that is the problem of an individual(a woman i might add), and not the state. How is the state treating women unfairly?
Hey, Megara...If you didn't want to do a female boss..Would it be okay with you if she denied you a promotion?
of course not. We have sexual harassment laws. A woman does not have to endure this anymore than a male does...
Laws don't always play out in court in a balanced way. If they did, we wouldn't have entertaining shows about lawyers. There is still a need for advocates. Advocating forgetting about this is incomprehensible to me.
