I guess I can tell you all, I am an avid trekkie. I really love and appreciate their positive view of the future. Science fiction. Half of the phrase is science and half is fiction. The Star Trek franchise sometimes goes more heavy on the fiction than the science. But that is not always the case. I esp. like their view of economics of the future. More communist really, than capitalist. But they may be on to something I think. No money, no possessions. Is it really possible? And just think of it. Someone born today will probably live to see the 22nd Century. I won't live that long. But some younger members of these boards might. What are some of your views of this matter, people of these boards? And when do you think it will come to pass? Things are not perfect now. But our hope lies in the future.
No. Everything will be free, and everyone will take what they want according to their need. People will still work but it will be more like play. Shitty jobs that no one wants to do will be shared out as chores amongst the community. Goods will be held in common, and people will get over the need to endlessly require possessions. Of course people will still have their personal stuff. There will be World peace. I wish... Many of you will call me communist. But no. It's something over than that. I can reserve the right to call you capitalist pigs.
It seems they still have possessions in Star treks human society. But not money indeed. It appeals to me too. No idea if we ever get there
It's interesting to me that Star Trek was so popular during the Cold War when that society was the antithesis of American capitalism. It's actuly a very socialist society where one is entitled to the benefits of society simply by being born. It's everything that would upset a Republican. I do believe that in the future money will not be such a cultural divider because no one will starve no will no die without healthcare. So many of the things the 1% have always had will not be so special. There will probably always be some sort of credit system that keeps modesty and sharing in place. For example I can probably go to a shop and buy myself cloths of food but I could not buy the entire store at the expense of anyone who comes latter like a rich man could do now. Why do I need so much? I should think of others. As much as it probably upsets some people society is moving to Star Trek socialism and a general idea of equality. That is why we such such extreme callousness and greed now. It the final show of an old way of thinking and we need this show to prove how wrong it is. I gurentee you that in 50 years, 100 years or more the times we live in now will we spoke of with fear and disgust. People will fear capitalism because they will picture Donald Trump and old men dying in their homes because they could not afford medical care and the society has a whole told them it was unfair to expect that for "free". This could lead to a society that lacks motivation like some hardcore capitalists claim. Why should one work when they will not starve? My belief is this will not be nearly as much of a threat as the Trump types claim. But it is undeniable human's thinking will change when we are not so competitive.
As long as people produce things and want things, in other words as long as there are people, there will be some form of money.
With replication technology able to materialize and abundance of pretty much anything and endless energy made possible by harnessing the power of di-lithium crystals money if it did exist would be an afterthought.
symbolic value isn't the only way to create voluntary positive incentives. i think the use of it will become more of a local option, and when people realize trying to make everything have to be about it, isn't the magic wand the bill of goods they've been sold claims it is, then it may become nearly or completely obsolete as a concept. the big speed bump ahead is going to make how people think afterwords, about a lot of things, very different from what it is easy to assume now, even hard for many to imagine otherwise. the descendents of human d.n.a. who inherit what comes after the eco-pocalyps, are going to have strong incentives to avoid many of the mistakes we are making now. and that includes incentives to over produce self destruction. people talk about bottle caps and bit coins, but the real economic of nature and the universe, runs on a scale of exchanges, that don't involve the way we're familiar with thinking of symbol as value. some analog of the concept, may persist or re-invent itself, but there's nothing inevitable about it having to. i really believe that what we're doing to the environment, is going to bring humanity within an inch of extinction, and increasing population levels are hastening the day of their near collapse. and with that, you know, people on the other side of that speed bump, the few, and quite possibly very different looking from anything human now, are just going to have more immediate things on their minds, then symbolic value based economics.
the 'we' part is up to us. symbolic value is not a default requirement of economics. there are infinite ways sapient beings can be free and happy that don't require obsession with symbols of value. it doesn't take magic, it doesn't take bit coins, and it has even already been done, and without guns or slavery either. its an option. and like all options, its humans and their cultures that are hazardous to attempt to predict. environments, though complex, are more understandable.
We have to remember that Earth erasing poverty and coming together as we see in Trek predates their invention in replicator technology. In the Star Trek mythos, it's first contact with the Vulcans that spurs humanity to come together and ultimately remove the profit motive from human pursuit. It's a humongous shift in philosophy.
entirely depends upon which 'we' and how far into which future. 3d printing and the internet, presuming both some how survive the ecopocalyps, could potentially make symbolic value obsolete now. its more of a cultural addiction, that we make things have to be about it as it is. it is indeed a matter of culture and phylosophy. and very successful civilizations based on potlatching have existed in earth's past. they didn't make a big splash, and it oughtn't be hard to guess, why the interests of existing powers don't want it taught to kids in schools, that it even existed, let alone was capable of working, without guns or slavery, i might add, and that it did so.
Well, that idea mainly came from The Next Generation, supposedly there was no money....and yet Tasha came from shithole planet where she had to hide from rape gangs and Shinzon grew up in child slavery Me thinks everyone in starfleet had it sweet, no need for money officially....at the expense of some worlds where everything was shite....i.e usual crap
Just on Star Trek, if replicators transform matter rather than just make matter out of thin air. What matter do they use? I think they were recycling their poo
that is correct, or more accurately algie cultures that feed on it, which then bud off something like plastic pellets, which contain all neccesary neutrients. not quite raw sewage. but ultimately any and all organic matter as source material. this is pretty much well known to anyone who has actually read the wide range of well thought out real science fiction that has been published, mostly during the 70s and 80s. oddly enough this wasn't what i was thinking about. 573 free and independent nations with flourishing economies, without guns, slaves nor currency, occupied what is now the u.s., before the european invasion of the western hemsiphere less then 600 years ago. the real motivation for the genocides which were committed against them, was so that those of us, who are the descendents of the invaders, would not know, or even imagine, this to have been possible.
Money is just another tool, while people are idiots. Go ahead, throw your money away, cuss at it, stomp on it, shred it, burn it, and then ask yourself why you are such an idiot. Certainly, the fewer things that require money to get done the better, but money definitely has its uses.
People will begin sharing their wealth more. People will finally accept that it's not right that some have so much while some have so little. All of the greedy people will die and fade away, and a new, more generous generation will take their place.
well if you can make everything without paying anyone to make it, who's going to have any money to buy it? there's no reason this can't work. its just that capitalism can't work under those circumstances. so i guess it depends on how far into what kind of a future. after the ecopocalypse, most people will be making most things for themselves, other then what they salvage from the ruins, which will be so common and people so few, that it may be centuries before the ruins of our world will become exhausted as a resource.
