Music can certainly transcend culture at times, but I would contend it is also a 'language' in it's own way and is also mathematical. One drawback about music as a form of communication is that it is weak in regards to expressing procedure and statements. This may sound odd initially as you can point to any number of anthems and dances but hear me out. Music relies on very abrupt rhythmic repetitions, most anthems and dance are centered around very repetitive structures, which don't require a complex sequence of directions. So one will likely not be able to give a complex set of descriptions in the time it takes for the rhythm to repeat or your set of assertions will be slower due to having to wait for the rhythmic repetition for your emphasis of commands. When music tends to be less structured, we tend to think of it as more abstract (free form jazz) and often it becomes less relatable to us in terms of any assertions being made and music that approaches no structure, we may not even recognize it as music as such but more like noise. Furthermore, much like langauge, music is often a product of culture. I.E. Microtones are rarely used in Western Music. Cultures tend to gravitate towards particular scales and modes as well. I think that music seems so freeing to us is because it doesn't require the direct communication between the individual(s) elicting the statement and a response. There is usually no inherent assertion or argument being made with music, although certainly when you couple strong lyrical words, with powerful music it can be an incredibly powerful connection and experience. There is an interesting discussion about Music's mathematical properties here from 14:00 - 17:30... I found this whole documentary fairly interesting, I think Ace K in particular may enjoy it. http://youtu.be/tR5R046vKNY
i sometimes contemplate the waveforms of digital signals between integrated circuits, and what they would sound like if they were slowed down so that their frequency fell within the range of human hearing. digital signals take the form of a square wave, but with a DC bias, but rather than being a smooth square wave tone, most of them would sound more like white noise i think due to the irregularity of pulses. music seems a lot more regular to me, but certainly complex ... i enjoy the complexity of music. information could certainly be encoded in music, and it certainly is (music is in fact information) .., its interesting thinking about it because music can convey imformation that words alone never could. regardless, any signal is only meaninful when received by a party that knows how it was encoded.
So long as we don't blow each other up first or run out of drinkable water, breathable air and livable land. We must become closer to nature before we can truly evolve. Before we can truly evolve we must learn to get along as the Human Race and recconect with the divinity of Mother Earth by learning to respect it as our primal mother and we must stop destroying it realizing that we owe all we have to its resources. Once we learn to respect those resources and the wellbeing of the people harvesting them we will be able to advance as a civilization. Only once we learn to make peace with all the people around us through communication as we have it will we truly have time to develop a more sophisticated system of communication. Right now our civilization is still learning the basics of how to get along.
This is in reference to Humanity at large and the crazy shit going on all over the world in the name of money power and greed
