So last night I was asked to go to a location and do a job, it started next week and would be weekdays only, they'd supply tools and vehicle. Today they rang me this afternoon and said they wanted me there tomorrow morning, not only that but I'd have to travel between 2 sites about 50 miles apart, and run them both, not only that they wanted me to use my own truck and tools! They wanted me to work right through to next weekend, and not pay any overtime for saturday and sunday, then they get all upset when I told them to stuff it. Why am I surrounded by idiots/
It is illegal in many countries to expect a worker to work overtime without proper compensation. Period. Report the asshats to the authorities and stand up to the man!
Employers aren't allowed to scam people or make them work overtime and not get paid. They are fuckwits if they do and they get shown the legal door pretty quickly
There’s a lot of that going on these days. Companies that lack any business ethics and try to get away with paying the bare minimum to their employees. Contracting is bad for that.
The rules might be different if it’s an individual person hiring a handy man to do one specific task.
Yeah, I know that, but I was an engineer for a rail contractor, what annoyed me was this, A, I told them months ago the guys on site hadn't a clue, and B, we're being told not to go to London, and they were adamant I had to. There's talk of putting London into lockdown, nothing in, nothing out, what happens if this comes in and they lock down for say 6 months, the job finishes in 3, but I can't leave for another 3, is the company going to pay my accomodation? I doubt it.
