Emanresu, thanks for responding. No problem if you feel the need to comment on what I said. It's sometimes difficult to leave a statement that we know is false alone. Yeah, it is a bit oversimplified isn't it?

Usually the prevailing viewpoint of atheists is that the best explanation is based on how things are. That the universe just 'is' and we don't need to further complicate anything by further explanations. One force interacts with another force and here is how they interact and here is the conclusion to those interactions. The question of why is same as the question to how. Everything beyond that does not matter. This viewpoint just never settled well with me because I felt that it ended up creating more questions than answers. Your comment made me think this because while this view is accepted by many there are also many that do not and I saw that as one of the reasons between the differences in worldview.

Your last paragraph is a loaded statement and I bet that a lot could be said about that I am not that articulate or knowledgeable to comment though, lol. But I would say that there really isn't a conflict between science and religion and that they never meant to.

There certainly is no inherent conflict between religious or supernatural concepts and science. This is because of methodological materialism. The goal of science is to provide natural explanations and therefor science must remain silent on supernatural matters.

However there is a huge conflict between religious dogmas, mythologies, and science. Obviously things like the creation account of genesis or the biblical account of Noah's flood are completely at odds with science. Whenever someone uses supernatural explanations to account for natural phenomena there will be a conflict between that account and science.

Similarly whoever tries to use human explanations of natural phenomena (I'm being Marxist), discovers the real appearance of what he's explained as both false and inadequate.

 

what "real appearance"? we have only the appearance we see, the appearance we tell each other, and the appearance we tell ourselves.
"real" is out there SOMEwhere, but all i know of it, is what i THINK i'm seeing and feeling.

 

Why do you assume that God can't be an element of power or force that affects the well-being of all life as we know it?

 

Supernatural explanations have, historically, almost always been about natural phenomena. Almost all belief systems include stories about how the earth came to be, how animals and plants came to be, how constellations came to be etc, and even stories about why people behave the way they do.

The idea that there can even be a separation between supernatural explanations and natural phenomena seems to be a fairly new concept.

And what does gravity have to do with god? I know, we'll call it Intelligent Falling

 

Fall off roofing 3 times over the years as I have,and one will understand the connection between gravity and god and who gets blamed and named for "intelligent falling". At least with some pungent words aimed at the concept.

 

Because thats not what God is according to the Christian bible (of which I'm arguing does not exist). God has a personality, he gets angry, people feel his wrath, he is jealous, etc. All of these qualities are what humans experience. We created the gods, no the other way around.

 

Humans have the ability to project angels and demons.

 

I grew up in Utah. The Mormon capitol of the world. I was born into the most strictly Mormon family I have ever witnessed. Every First Sunday of the month, I sit and listen to the 65 yr. old man "bare his testimony" and how he talks to "God" every night when he gets on his knees and laces his fingers.

I was the first male on my Mother's side of the family to not go on a LDS Mission in over 4 generations..

Don't get me wrong. If you believe in "god" or a "creator", I greatly envy you. You are fortunate to have such a shallow thought process.

And if you hate me for that, it just makes it that much better..

God is a concept based purely on fear. and fear alone.

The area i've been brought up actually ostracizes religious people. If you believe in God you are going to get the piss taken out of you

 

Whatever happened to being able to believe in what you like? I mean if it will harm others, then fine, people should intervene, but most religions don't. I don't understand why other people's beliefs effect some people in that way

 

Beliefs contend with other beliefs, not with the truth.
