How long has HF been around? Hippies go back long before I do, but from what I've read, even back then our country was divided. In fact, I asked an old timer if he's ever seen so much division in our society, and he said "Yes. In the sixties." As I understand it the hippie "Make Love, not war" faction was just one of the alternative movements challenging the status quo back then. There were also the Yippies, and farther to the Left, even more militant groups like SDS, the Weather Underground, and the folks who ran around waving their red Mao sayings books. The energy back then seemed to be on the left. Although nominally hippies were supposed to be accepting of everybody, they were implicitly at variance with Republican values, materialism, and the Establishment, including LBJ-style Democrats. The right wingers who seem to be drawn to the site in recent times are a puzzlement. My guess is the attraction might be the drugs, sex and rock n'roll, or maybe these are the ex-hippies who joined the materialistic mainstream back in the 80s and became the "yuppies" that we know and love so well. Cheech and Chong cover it well in the movie Rude Awakening. Or they could be just Republican/Russian trolls and bots.
There's a line from the movie "3 From Hell" when Otis is getting interviewed in prison he looks at the interviewer and says, "The truth is a knife. It cuts deep, it cuts hard and it cuts both ways. You best know who's holding the handle." It's kinda funny since my user title comes from a line Otis had in "The Devils Rejects" and my profile picture is Rob Zombie. I partially picked it because I look like Rob Zombie. C/S, Rev J
Tsk tsk ... fake Russian indeed! The entire post was done with tongue in cheek. It was like Russian Onomatopoeia ... no it wasn't. It was just me, Dax makng light of all the tension, and bad mouthing, the propaganda, lies, fake news and other shite put out by both the liberals and the conservatives and posted here on HP by both sides. Hokay?
My fairy Godmother once asked me if I’d rather have a long penis or a long memory… I forget what my answer was. ~Stewart Francis
Hatred, racism and divisiveness have been around as long as humans. It comes and goes in wave, perhaps astrology has something to do with the cycles. But yes things were equally divided and times were really bad in the 60s. The the Viet Nam war further divided us. And along came Trump, who has really split the nation. It was part of the plan...and he succeded.
The nation is always split at election time. Perhaps the mainstream media on all sides continuously spewing party propaganda are the cause.
There is a good possibility that you are correct. The American political system is in dire need of overhaul, and as Bill Maher pointed out on Friday night, the odds of gettting both houses to pass any amendment with a super majority, and then getting the required number of states (35?) to ratify said amendment to become law - are practically nil. We need a leader who can pull us together not drive us apart. I don't see either party offering a decent candidate, it's simply the choice between two evils... which one is your preference being the only factor in the decision making of voters.
I prefer to work for peace & justice under a Capitalist oligarchy than a Fascist police state, and those were the only two options on the ballot.
short answer, so much love of drama as to hate logic and the logic of consideration, for the sake of it.
A lot of folks these days are afraid. Real wages for the working class peaked in 1978. 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, 40% have less than $400 in the bank, and 32% have no savings at all. 30 million Americans have no health coverage at all, a third don't get 'sick days', and half of Americans do without medical care because they can't afford it. Half a million go bankrupt every year from medical bills. 5 million have fallen into poverty since the pandemic started; 12 million will lose their extended unemployment benefits the day after Christmas. Some folks are afraid of losing their White privilege to uppity Negroes and uppity women; some are afraid of their mayonnaise culture being polluted by emigres. Some folks are afraid of being murdered by a militarized police heavily infiltrated by white supremacists and neo-Fascists, or being "dissappeared" into the American gulag, which warehouses 25% of the world's prisoners despite comprising only 4.8% of the global population; up 400% since 1980; mostly black & brown. Some folks are afraid of illegal heavily armed neo-Fascist militias and Brownshirt street gangs, afraid of being attacked for thinking or loving differently; afraid of being rammed by a car or shot in the head by a CS grenade for exercising their Constitutional rights. Some are afraid of the malevolent vandalizing of our democracy and the rise of one-party Fascism. Some are afraid of runaway anthropogenic climate change. Some are afraid of what all this means for their children's future. Then there's the pandemic. People may think that they're angry, but I suspect that mostly they're just very afraid. May all beings without exception transcend all suffering and know peace. "He robbed me, he beat me, he threw me down!" Those who dwell on such thoughts never still their hatred. "He robbed me, he beat me, he threw me down!" Those who abandon such thoughts find peace. Hatred is never overcome by hatred. Only by love is hatred overcome. This is the law; ancient and eternal.
Have no idea why India, often regarded as 'the largest democracy in the world' along with Botswana, Africa's oldest democracy, is considered in the same category as Chile, which had seen a 16 year old military dictatorship that overthrew a popular democratically elected government. In a neighbourhood of religious, military and political dicatorships in Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and Burma, and monarchies in the nearby Middle East, India kept up a democratic front for over 73 years, without even once lapsing into military dictatorship, inspite of having the largest army on earth and being the fourth most powerful military in the world. India's successful democratic model had also enabled other nations in Asia to embrace democracy confidently rather than dictatorship and continues to exert a positive influence through example in the region. Botswana too is Africa's oldest democracy and has seen uninterrupted elections and the lowest perceived corruption ranking in Africa. Just like a man, a nation's achievements or success should be seen in the context of the obstacles it had to overcome and its range of influence. Comparing a selfmade man with princes born with a silver spoon in their mouth is an unfair comparison.
The Economist's rankings are based on supposedly "objective" indicators of how democratic a country is in a given year. It doesn't give points for progress or consider past history. The rankings are based on five criteria: electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, political participation, political culture, and civil liberties. India slipped ten points to 51st position. India drops 10 places in Democracy Index after 'erosion of civil liberties' The reasons given were "erosion of civil liberties", low levels of political participation and underdeveloped political culture: Of course these ranking are based on human judgments and are fallible. The Economist seems to think that Modi's Hindu nationalism has sown intolerance and division in the country threatening to India's Muslim minority. Narendra Modi stokes divisions in the world’s biggest democracy If you disagree, you might take it up with The Economist.
