why so many qualifiers for 'new'?

    New is new. It doesn't get any more new than that.

    But people say things like brand new, brand spanking new, jip dandy brand spanking new. :confused:

    It's much the same with 'forever'. You don't really need to say 'forever and ever and ever'.

    Some people like to spice up their language rather than remain plain old boring like everyone else.

    a used car can still be new to somebody if they didn't already own it. that makes it new but not brand new.

    Newly owned but not new.

    you can also get a new wife or a new girlfriend that still doesn't mean she's not used up.

    There actually could be a lot of interesting discussion on what new means? Can it be made up of old atoms? What if it is made of recycled material? That is interesting. I had never really given it much thought.
