    Yay! Very well said.

A friend of mine one day asked me if I thought he was a musician. I said, "Do you play music?" He said "Yes".

    "Then you're a musician".

It doesn't matter how it sounds, if people like it, if you have a record deal (winning a record deal is like getting struck by lighting. It's probably not going to happen). What makes a musician is the musician making music. That's all.

So stop trying to judge other people, and stop laughing at the poor American Idol auditioners, because they make music, it comes from their soul, and not one of us has the permission to judge them.

What notion strikes me as a little odd, is that the term musician here seems to equate to rock/pop/band branch of music. Does this attitude apply to orchestral types? Kazoo to Sitar players and all the oddities and cultural wonderments that make up the wide world of music?

OMG. I so wanna play timpani so I can be popular and a star! :1eye:

I'm with themnax. I haven't played anything in a dogs age but am generally adept enough musically to give most insturments a decent shot. I've touched my main instrument maybe twice in the past decade and I'm still good enough that a layman couldn't tell, though nowhere remotely near the level I used to compete at. However, since I no longer play, I don't really consider myself a muscian anymore.

Of course, maybe I just played the bagpipes to be cool and popular. :spliff:

    My answer would be:
Yes, i consider myself a musician and music is NOT my talent

Uh... so you can't be a musician unless you have talent? That's bullcrap dude. The love to play should be enough! Should people be disallowed to play music only because they weren't innately blessed with superior musical qualities?

And in my experience you don't have to be particularly talented in order to turn out the most wonderful, engaging and emotionally powerful music. Talent ain't everything.

I play music to play music, not to be universally adored. If one person (me) likes it, then that's enough. If someone comes up and says "hey that was great!" then fine, thanks and all, but I play for me, not anyone else.

I play drums, and sense I was about 4 years old I have always loved music, and drums. I remember jamming on my dads bands kit playing barney at about age 4. I had 2 child sized kits until I picked up drums again about 5 years ago. I've just always loved playing music, drums, percussion, harmonica, stringed instruments, I even play tuba. I also love singing and writing songs. I'm in a band, as well as love just solo jamming. Its just my thing, my talent. I love to create music, play music, record music, listen to music, collect music, and perform music. It's just amazing, and my life. Its an expression of everything I feel and love.
For this I consider myself a musician.

I make music because I want to make music. I never force myself to make music. I do it because I enjoy the process. I don't really even consider myself to be a musician, rather someone who enjoys making music.

As far as talent. I believe my music is good. If I didn't believe in my music. I would have never released it or I'd work on it until I thought it was good enough. At the same time, I'm not full of myself. I don't think I'm the greatest or anything. I'm just content with what I create.

Parents take my guitar away most days...but I have drums!

It'd be awesome to be a musician for a living, but for fun is just as good- I like to play some songs on my guitar that I like and whatnot, I guess my band/improv skills show on my kit.

Ya, but as Style saidish, I'm glad I have a way to express myself.

Im a musician because I enjoy all aspects of making music. writing, practicing, studying, recording, improvising, mixing, mastering, producing, gigging, jamming...Especially on a gig, I get a total high. Ill be laughing all night long after a gig, because I really do get a high from it. I hope to do this for the rest of my life. Someone take me on tour please....

and the girls dig it...nothing wrong with that dude. But believe me, If I could piece togther a decent living on music, Im there, but it is not very realistic to be in music for the money. If you want a high paying job, don't choose musician. Youd be better off getting a degree and playing the lottery.

I consider myself a musician, it is what I have wanted to do for as long as I can remember.

the term musician is used so loosely these days.
Anyone that picks up a guitar and plays a few chords and covers a few shoddy tunes calls themselves a musician.

    this is real music

I think there's people who like music, people who perform music and musicians---people who were simply born to make music!

of course music 'belongs' to everyone ( I read this in one of the posts ) , but only a few people truly belong to the music.

so everybody has a right to consider themselves musicians and make music, but in the end the audience recognizes quality and appreciates real talent. by this I mean that even people who buy albums just because everyone else does can't deny the talent of people like Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Eric Clapton and others.

even if you don't like them, you have to respect them :D I hope this makes some sense... :)

Zoya it does make sense, but its not true in this day and age. Most of the record buying public would not recognize real talent or artistry if it slapped them in the face.
