I've often wondered why veggie meals are always named after meat foods, it seems a little bit mad to me. You have nut cutlets, now a cutlet is a piece of meat, then you have a nut roast, vegetarian sausage rolls, and recently a well known bakery has started doing vegetarian steak bakes! wtf, how can anything that doesn't contain meat be called something that is basically meat! It's all very odd

    Yea...
They have "vegan ham" at this pho restaurant I like in several dishes. It's good stuff - better than ham even! But I suppose they could get away with calling it meat substitute. just people wouldn't like it as much.

Though some vegans have issues with that sort of consideration. They would rather have it be totally unrelated to animals - sort of weaponized against the meat industry if at all possible. So those folks might think that calling it "ham" is counter intuitive. But for the purpose of a pho restaurant, I think it probably fits in with the rest of their menu pretty well.

It always makes me laugh when our son (who is vegetarian) discusses what Jane is cooking him for dinner. :yum:

He prefers the chicken free chicken to the lamb free lamb.

In the United States, we have a meat substitute called "Gardein" which is pretty good. And there are also "Beyond" burgers, which simulate beef patties. I actually like them both. Better than veggie burgers... :yum:

    1. Virgin boy eggs

When something is already pretty tasty, it’s dangerous to do anything too wacky with it. The Chinese appear not to have got this particular memo and have spent centuries doing unspeakable things with eggs. One of the more alarming traditions is tong zi dan - chicken eggs which are soaked and boiled in the urine of virgin peasant boys. Though this might seem like a joke, there’s no suggestion that Chinese cooks are taking the piss.

in the UK we havee this stuff called quorn, it's supposed to be a meat substitiute, they reckon it tastes like meat, to me it tastes like crap.I struggle to understand the concept, if I want to eat a lamb chop or a chicken breast then I'll eat one, not something that pretends to be one, why!

    Tempeh

The eternal battle for any aspiring vegetarian cook is to find a proper replacement for meat. Understandably, this poses many challenges and chefs have been forced to come up with many creative ways to produce something meatless and still edible. Tempeh is one such solution. Formed from soy beans and looking slightly like mummified nougat, this traditional Indonesian dish is a staple on vegan and vegetarian dinner tables.

YUUK! When I was away last year I accidentally ate some of that Tofu stuff, I nearly threw up, it was awful, at least I think it was Tofu, it was about an inch square lump of white plastic that had been fried in batter, never again.

I love this advertising poster that complies with trading standards laws,

Since people now recognize Quorn as meat free, the laws have now been relaxed.

One might call it a No-Bull effort on their part to Con-vince omnivores to stop being omnivores.

So that people know what it is supposed to be imitating the taste of, and what they might be able substitute it for.

    it isn't.

but people who want to promote the idea, who want to reasure meat addicts they can satisfy their cravings with nutrients of plant origen,
came up with this idea of stuff that sortof kindof imitates meat made out of plant stuff.

personally i feel like anything passing itself off as something else is kind of a cleche'.

the point isn't that meat is evil, although killing anything is killing something, which on the other paw is also part of nature,
but rather the amount of meat humans in economically advantaged parts of the world consume,
is excessive, and all out of balance with the kind of environment even humans need if the species wants to continue to exist.

    I figure it's mostly a marketing ploy.

Speaking as a vegan it's because meat is a part of human history. Many things that taste good were one alive so someone deciding to stop eating meat will probably want all those good tastes still. There is a market for it if you can meet the customer's ethical demands.
