No, so far I've just written little melodies to sing and play. But I've played with other people before...I've just never been sure that I am a musician, really. You remind me of a guy I used to sit around and listen to play. He could do anything. It was really impressive. That's fair, but I'm speaking more of intentions. I suppose not any jerk could practice guitar. Gargamel couldn't play guitar. Or could he? And if Gargamel could play guitar, would that be rockin? I do question whether all people have the same amount of what I guess I'd call "vision". I don't like the dark vision of most new bands. It has mass appeal. So I raise the question, Is this how we're all supposed to behave? And the answer is obviously no and everyone knows that already. What is positive about the vision of these bands, I'd really like to know. It just seems totally negative and they're being ironic? I like that one Ratt song...Round and Round. That's the only Pink Fairies song I've heard, and I don't listen to it much, but I think it has a good message. If technicality without a message can save a band, then a message without technicality can save a band. You're having a difficult time dealing with the power of the Fairy. Listen to the song again and take the message to heart.
I honestly tried. Sadly, the message was lost on me because I couldnt listen to more than a couple of seconds of the music. Since im not a vocalist, I admit, it isnt often I will listen to the vocals beyond their pitch and overall sound. I do use them as cues but if they dont have a sound that appeals to me I wont focus on them. Its a bit weird really.
I know that not all have the vision. I listen to hundreds of guys and it isnt just about the lyrics being visionary..its about that plus their phrasing within a piece, the dynamics and how they fit within the structure etc..
What do you mean? It's totally a dark and depressing song. The first few lines are about how the weight of the world is on his shoulders and then he starts screaming. And that is the point at which I turned off the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XCvH2m1Gfo
Then he talks about finding a way to reach the sky and so on. Dude is in a bad way when the song begins, but pulls out of the abyss.
Hmm the minor threat tune..if I were to go in cold, and they told me to play it with a pink feel ,I'd know exactly what to play, and it would be that.
I don't mean pretentious in any quantifiable musical way, or anything - just like, they're "godsmack", everything about them screams "look at meeeeeeee".
No more than Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Guns n Roses, Van Halen, Aerosmith, and so on. I like rock with attitude and a lot of it is rather "look at me" type music.
Does he literally talk about reaching for the sky? Don't you think that's weak? It's like "I don't want to die/I'll reach for the sky/Don't ask me why/I've got to try". There I wrote a Shineback song. I think if they told you to play a punk song and you played a Minor Threat song, the execs would swiftly kick you out of the room. AS IF Minor Threat has commercial appeal. And yet, they're legends in the punk scene. Which is huge. I mean, you can find a Minor Threat CD at Tower Records. Nickelback have commercial appeal and you're the first person I've met who admits to liking them. Which is bully for you, way to stay true to what you like.
Like I said, its punk. And dude , I do stay true to what I like and know is good playing. Otherwise why would I submit myself to ridicule? So, um..lets hear some of your lyrics eh? And since youre so critical , how bout some of your music to go with the songs youre writing? Everyone wants to be a critic, but can you do better?
Seriously, if you dont like whats out there, and you refuse to at least acknowledge good musicianship of the peeps who DO work their asses off to get the music they are feeling heard, get off your asses, learn how to play and do it yourselves. How hard is that?
And Neon, your words up there are horrible btw. Just a little rhyme that..well sounds kinda pathetic..you couldnt pay me to play a song with words like that. Im not trying be mean either. Its funny to read some of the stuff you are saying. You might not like Shinedown, but a lot of people do..and many are actual musicians, so it isnt about comercial appeal that they have their fan base.If they had that, they would appeal to YOU , just like the commercial/filler tune Sultans of swing did to you. You never even heard the good shit..the real shit they put out. But we sure knew it was there..
Its a good thing to stop bitching about the songs they pick that might have mass appeal, and look into a band a bit before just slamming the crap out of them .You might find something you actually like.
