I've only heard the first 2 Godsmack albums but I like some of their stuff. This is a pretty wicked song... http://youtu.be/JK993nVMam4
OK, perhaps, but Godsmack is like some of the worst of 90s nu-metal. It just sounds so plastic and tacky.
I can't believe there are still people who like nickleback. Taste is subjective and I'm usually pretty respectful of various musical tastes, but ill never understand nickelback fans. Or creed fans.
I feel they brought a sound more back to the roots of hard rock compared to stuff like Limp Bizkit. Songs like "Voodoo" are even dare I say, introspective in a way that I had not heard from much Rock music at that time.
I like the vast opinions on what "rock" even is. A lot of what's in here I just wouldn't even bother to label rock. Some bands here I'd label as "Hard Rock". I think when you start to downtune and add the gain then you're stepping into "metal" world. To me, rock and roll was like Vietnam Era stuff. Upbeat, guitars and a few good solos. Nowadays I look at guns and roses, older Motörhead and ACDC type of stuff to be rock and roll. But I'm young. And Death metal > than all.
Rock is whatever makes you rock the fuk out. And for me? That could absolutely be songs with great sweeping arpeggios placed just right ..much more than some tired 145 progression thats been played to death , and truely IS boring..to listen to as well as play. But again, thats why theres so many different types of rock..different tastes for different moods. Btw, the Beatles used dropped tuning and so did Zepplin and Nirvana for some songs.. its not just limited to metal and hard rock.Anytine I jam with peeps I always ask (I use a hip shot) just in case they play in a drop cause so many do now.
Guns and roses have always been rock, they were never hard enough to be metal , so your current perception is on point. lol I cant stand em..never could. AcDc and Motorhead= rock as well.
I dunno man. It sounds like this song, only not enjoyable. It wanted to be this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOqP3wj2x14 I mean, it's not teriffic in an objective way, but I like it, the context makes it enjoyable. Godsmack doesn't have a fun context, it just somehow manages to be pretentiously boring.
Lol... pretentious??? The main riff in the verse is like 4 chords! Comparing them to Soundgarden isn't the worst thing in the world. I mean don't get me wrong, I love some Clash but it's not like they were perfect, this pretty much sounds like a Wham! B-side. http://youtu.be/tVKC5YE85Ks
http://youtu.be/gqSF2h0IQhA The Clash...pop 3 doors down came out with a fairly good rock tune not super long ago..
http://youtu.be/qzup2yBRXOQ Another good example of modern rock is the Shinedown tune, Fly from the inside.
http://youtu.be/t-6QqBP1Oio Trapt put one out that has all the elements of a good rock song told schoolers might not like it, but it is what it is, and thats rock.
