But does the rock 'n roll formula you're talking about here only encompasses the technical stuff of the music? Because then it might be missing something. And knowing just how to play rock is not what makes good rock or rock stay alive.

Are we talking about professional musicians or a garage band playing a house party for free?
Spontaneous things can happen onstage and it can be entertaining or distracting. Professional rock bands play mostly the same songs ( depending on the size of their repertoire), night after night. The bulk of your experience is completely non-spontaneous and the result of musicians practicing the same things, over and over, hundreds and thousands of times, not to mention the immense repetition it takes to even become a proficient musician. Music is organized sound, and if it is to be presented (and sold) it must be at least somewhat repeatable, no? Even if just minimally, even improvised guitar solos usually contain bit's, segments and ideas of previous solos the guitarist can't help to want to use and build on.

And there is such a thing as stage show. I mean, who wants to see a band play epic hard rock and just stand there shoe-gazing?
I don't mind if for instance a rock singer is posturing during a power ballad (god help us,lol) But the posturing better be backed by some serious lung or it's gonna look fake.
If it's funk rock there better be some boogying on stage or it's just not gonna look right!

Really though, it occurs to me the kind of spontaneous, genuine personality, charisma stuff you are really talking about is like this kind of pre-performance stage banter...Real people, not plastic pretention

( yes you have to watch the video to get it) Recordings not the greatest but some serious (but fun) rock music here too!

http://youtu.be/1sevxFrCDoQ About formulas.. answer for yourself. Would you rather listen to this guy? Sure, he looks the part, and hes having fun, but could I or another musician play anything with him? Hell no.

  5. Once again, rock isn't a formula. There are formulas, yes, but there is no formula. I'm not a monkey who sees awesome jumping and thinks you are awesome. In fact I've never once gone to a concert and hoped that the musicians jumped a lot.

It all depends on the song and the band, and I'm not putting anything out of the range of possibility. Maybe a band could play the most epic song ever whilst shoe-gazing.

I like and appreciate skill, technicality, simplicity and personality about all the same. I probably tend to admire bands that are dynamic in their music but I like a lot of simple stuff like punk as well.

"Once again, rock isn't a formula. There are formulas, yes, but there is no formula."

You are incorrect Neon. There is simply a very wide range of them in rock...but formulas they are.

  8. There are different styles...I guess you could call them formulas. What I'm saying is that there is no one formula to rule them all. And sometimes a musician who is less technically capable than another can write a better song than one who is technically capable. So you see rock is unpredictable. Knowing all the licks in the world isn't going to necessarily make you a good composer, knowing just a few licks isn't necessarily going to make you a bad one.

Many songwriters cant really play..but they have the gift, non the less and they get musicians who can play.

I've been to a few outdoor concerts and festivals.

I like festivals like Wäcken because you ge to see up to 10 of your fav. bands in a few days.

But I do not like the crowds and the energy just isn't there like small venue concerts.

To me nothing beats like, Cannibal Corpse in a small brick dive of a venue. Just a wall of noise and blast beats. :)

  13. I thought we were talking about why rock is still dead. You say these bands are keeping it alive. I don't think they're what's keeping it alive. Rock is going to continue whether these bands keep playing or not.

Sure they are..no one plays, the music dies. The next crop of players are going to take it somewhere else too, just like they have all along.

And that dear posters is what rock is about also...it always has, and always will evolve. It will die when players stop playing it.

  17. There are people playing besides the bands we have discussed. If Nickelback stops playing, there will probably be parties in honor of that. And those parties will be more rock and roll than anything Nickelback has ever done. I think what the OP was trying to express is that Nickelback sucks.

Dude, I dont give a (edit:flying )fuck if he thinks they suck. Thats not the point of this thread. And it doesnt change one thing about how its all going to go.
Lmao..you, Neon, just like to argue. When it comes to anything beyond your personal opinion about music, you dont have a leg to stand on. So just stop already. You dont like them, so what..they are living the dream and if you can too..Write your stuff, play your guitar and go for it.

For the record? I like people who can play, even if I dont like their stuff. Just because I dont like them, it doesnt mean they suck. You act like Nickleback is the only band I like or something..surely you arent that dumb.
