"Well hey, if they aren't mediocre musicians than their sound must be freaking awesome." Haha yes, it isnt too darn shabby.
Of course the combi of skill, intuition and passion is the best chance that a band will actually create something that rocks my world. Just saying skill and knowledge do not mean the sound of a band is going to blow my mind on itself, not nearly always. It all depends on the details. What do they actually have for sound, and are their songs actually cool, despite all their musicianship. Why not post some really cool and new rock stuff and proof to OP it is alive and kicking (instead of arguing over eachothers opinions and taste) Here's some more jam stuff I dig a lot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajNfiOwwkoM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0_GSDyRpxY
I think you understand what that sentence means. Just because they are skilled does not mean a band will create a good and meaningful sound. It may just sound well produced and that it matches all the elements. Like pop music. Knowing how to play an instrument is one thing, creating good rock sound by writing new songs is another!
I agree..rarely you get guys who cant play but because of engineering and mixing, come off with a decent sounding song. And see, I AM posting stuff I like very much, and that epitomizes the type of rock I like. The stuff youve posted? I dont like so much, so I could ask the same of you..but I dont.
Again, knowledge and skill isnt everything, but it plays a big role. If you dont know at least the basics, you cannot convey it in its true essence. And itll sound like shit.
Shinedowns song writing is solid. And the lyrics work with the music. I like the progressions and sound..its good rock. You dont like it..thats ok. But that doesnt mean its not good.
Of course skill and knowledge plays a big role LOL. I was just saying it sounded like you emphasized too much on it. While there are too many bands with members that have skills and I reckon knowledge too but still come up with an entirely lame sound. This is what sparked my thought about intuition and passion. If we look at rock history you will see how it is. But in the end what is good rock and not remains subjective. edit: you don't have to go on about Shinedown because I think they are mediocre and even bad. Please don't We have to agree to disagree about them. Same with Lacuna Coil, Nightwish etc. Sure there song writing is solid, sure there sound is professional and developed, does it appeal to me, do i find it rocking? No. Should they or their fans be concerned about that. Also no I think it is not good rock and I am entitled to my opinion. I actually find these bands, even in their own particular subgenres, so boring and lame that I could say they are actually part of the reason people say rock is dead. Explaining why you find them good will not change anything. I understand they have skills, I understand their songwriting is solid, but it is all about the sound for most listeners in the end. And the sound doesn't cut it (yes subjective )
Ok..listened to your vids. I guess if you like staying in one chord for upteen minutes playing the same thing over and over..sounds like a bad practice tape. boring as hell to me and the mix is horrific. But theres no question they are rock. the second is just plain bad, across the board.the guitar isnt even in tune and its very boring. No emotion but an emotion produced by being fucked up. Overall sound just plain aweful. But if thats what you like, ok.
http://youtu.be/rCNReEA3bKE?list=RDrCNReEA3bKE I might have already posted that but its a good example of what I like in a jam band tune.
Indeed, that's what I like. I feel you think your opinion should matter a bit to me but I'm afraid it doesn't. I have seen all of these bands live and I know I love their sound to bits and have a great time together with many others. This is what makes rock worthwile to me and why I would proclaim it alive. I would not enjoy myself at a Linkin park concert (well at least not by concentrating on the music) and certainly not associate it with what I perceive as the real and alive spirit of rock. I hope this is no issue to you at all, because it shouldn't be
If you care about big stars perhaps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GuuVYQtsd0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2vdRSrdM1E
What, do you think I was being sarcastic? I said way to stay true to yourself. Sincerely. People do like the Shinedown. Note to self: don't put down Shinedown or things are going to get personal.
The important thing? Is that we agree that good rock isnt dead. I know my opinion doesnt matter to you, and thats fine. But it might just matter enough to someone , and perhaps allow them an insight as to what goes on in the heart of musicians who play what they hear. If not, thats ok too.
Yes, I've fallen for the commercial ploy and Nickelback is the epitome of rock. I understand now. Brains. Braaaaains.
Things take on a personal aspect when someone implies they know whats going on in the head or heart of a band they dont happen to like. From what I was reading, it was so far off the mark, I felt the need to put what I did out there. I know those guys and I know that most of what was said as far as intentions and all was simply not true. So yes, im going to stand up for them in that respect.
Your opinion matters to me. I disagree with a lot of it, but it's not like I'm disrespecting you as a person.
Brains? Listen, it doesnt take brains to see the typing on the board. Just the songs you picked, told that story.
