Why is going for a walk considered weird for young people?

Remembering in George Orwell's: 1984 : walking was considered suspect.

Someone here once said They did not want to be seen walking, "people might think that I have no car"

Wow, come to think of it, I haven't seen a young person walk in quite a while.

Kids in my neighborhood ride those motorized Segway-without-a-handle things to a friend's house (likely just across the street, but definitely less than 4 houses away) to play video games. Lol, I hope they drink Gatorade in this heat!

It's hard to text while walking, so I've heard.

because corporate capitalism having become the state religion (in the u.s.), anyone walking is committing the sacrilege of not driving a car.

(i still cling to hope there may be places on planet earth where this has never become the case and might not ever. and if not on earth, certainly the populated worlds circling other suns)

I love the group of us HF-ers who are in our thirties coming into these kind of threads and being unsure if we disprove the theory by being young and doing XYZ or if we're actually counted as old now.

I think young (under 20s) are often very scared of kidnapers/murderers/rapists/muggers and they feel safer if they don't go for a walk.

    People aren't into exercise
If they were they would go and take a walk.
I usually take my parents dog for a walk.
Sure he pulls on the lead but for a 17 month old blue roan cocker spaniel pup it's expected that he will do that.

Op mentioned flat mate, so I took young to essentially mean twenty-somethings.

I don't hang out with anyone under 20, so I can't really speak on that. Perhaps what you say is true and even enforced by parents more now.

In light of souls thing there ^ maybe people in their 20s share this fear. I've never really been scared of things like that.

I'm sure most of these attacks happen in city centres around nightclubs rather than on country walks. People have this feeling that people = safety and a forest on your own is scary.. But really a rapist hanging out in a forest isn't going to get a lot of victims passing by.

A rapist usually has enough with one victim a night.
Here where countryside and city limits often cross over into another women would be smart to watch themselves in both kind of places. The rape (and murder) cases i can think of off the top of my head are at least as often in the rural parts. On the edge of town or between two lively villages

rapes, like most crimes, are committed by perps known to their victims, a whole lot more often then by actual strangers.

the problem, for whatever reason, people are reluctant to unplug themselves from their sacred automobiles, is that having become uncommon,
it has now become a very reasonable fear, that law enforcement might view walking, as a 'suspicious activity'.

(not just for young people, but those of us of all ages,
with the elderly, often assumed to be homeless)
