I am honestly SICK and FUCKING TIRED of people saying ignorant shit like that. "All hippies do it smoke pot!" Go ahead, take the propaganda! There you go...good corporate puppet
its more because hippies have degenerated into less than a political movement... now tons of people think being a hippy is about smoking lots of weed, wearing 'hippy' clothes, playing guitar, wearing hemp, or maybe being in drum circles... When the hippy movement was big, that's when we first learned of a lovely lil drug called lsd... that helped... but now who hasnt heard of LSD... now'n'days all the "hippies" are more concerned about going to the latest Phish concerts, wearing kewl hippy clothes and dreading their hair than spreading political enlightenment... Being a hippy has turned into just another social club... like being a prep or a jock or nerd... The old hippy movement had LSD, not to mention the Vietnam War, which was an insanely evil war with no merit... and not to mention the Draft helped the hippy movement a lot... if a draft happened in the states again, I dont think it'd be that hard to have some sort of new political movement whether or not it is labeled a hippy movement or not. It doesnt matter what we call it... its the idea behind the movement... lots of us would argue that something much like the "hippy revolution" (although they never revolted or changed america) is going on today... we just got rid of all the stereotypes which linked us to hippies... Not to mention the media outlets seem to portray hippies in an evil light... People do make fun of hippies a lot, and some times they have good reasons... thats why we cant aim for a new hippy movement, coz the new revolution isnt gonna be about smoking weed, dropping LSD, wearing tye dye clothes, hemp, and phish t-shirts... its gonna be about what matters.
I think the biggest problem is that people today who are interested in a new movement are too caught up in trying to recreate the hippie movement. The days are gone, the politics have changed, society has changed and its a different world. If anyone really wants to make change they need to use what is available today and realize what will work today in starting and perpetuating a new revolution. And like some others have said, so many people today think that being a hippie is a fashion trend or a lifestyle that involves making music, doing drugs and spending time outside. If you (the universal you) want to "recreate" a movement, people need to become more involved in politics, follow what is going on with the government, because that is what it was all about.
One reason I gave in another thread is because the neo-hippie movement has no famous icons or gurus. Where are the Timothy Learys, Ken Keseys, Abbie Hoffmans and Jerry Rubins of today? Who is there for us to rally around?
People, remember: HIPPIE WAS THE 60s FASHION. Just like a lot of things, it was ruined by mass exposure.
There are few hippies left today, sure some people consider themselves hippies, but the true hippies were in the 60's. i also think one reason that we have not started a revolution is because we are not as fearless as the original hippies.
GOD DAMMIT. this is not the 1960's. be something, stop wishing for something to happen. be the change you wish to see. god knows we need a revolution more now than ever, so start doing it. what do you have to lose?
Yes, reinstating the draft would definitely fuel the anti-war movement, and while there's been a lot of talk about it I don't believe Bush is likely to do it, he knows what the backlash would be like. So you ask, why has a new hippie revolution not happened yet? Perhaps it's because our leaders in Washington know from experience just how far they can push us. It's a cynical assessment, but I'm afraid it just may be true.
I totally get where you're coming from dude. I'm staying in Union, Oregon right now for the summer and I'm probably having the worst time of my life hearing all the gay ass hippy jokes. It really sux.
He's right man, the main reason we havn't started the newrevolution is fear. We're afraid of losing the fight, afraid no one will follow us, afraid the other hippies won't have faith in u. FUCK FEAR!!!! You think it's tough to stand up to the u.s. government. Think what it must be like to be Iraki and trying to stand up to the insurgency. If you seriously want to have a revolution. U have to be prepared to actually stand up and protest. U have to be prepared to go to jail for your beliefs. Don't just hope the rest of the herd will catch n. YOU HAVE TO BE THE SPARK!
the nation needs enlightenment & I see it around every day a little bit more. like some have already said here, NOW is all there is ... no preaparation or sitting and waiting ... just BE what your mind is ... egos stand in the way of so many there nothing to wait for, just BE here doing what you do and being who you are ... think less & love more thats how we will do it ... live in the stars again ... detach from this world more and greater things will happen around us we have to WAKE UP & BELIEVE AGAIN ... not just that we'll change politics and the guys in suits, but the way we all live & the way we all think if you begin to feel the energy and the flow, the stars will begin to line up each begin with themself ... not anything but YOUR MIND
You mean like, why did all the hippies move to Eugene? Because there's no work there! Welcome to the northwest, and remember, as a hippie you need to be able to laugh at yourself.
"If you (the universal you) want to "recreate" a movement, people need to become more involved in politics, follow what is going on with the government, because that is what it was all about." I couldn't agree more, however, the media today makes it nearly impossible to actually be able to change anybody's mind from what they want to think. There are so many different news channels and newspapers that take the same story and twist it into something completely different in order to portray what they want it to be. I try to convince people at school and they come back with completely bogus answers and assume it's true just because their newschannel says it. This is one reason i think the way to start a revolution is to start it against the media and work our way up from there.
All of you speak of having a revolution, but would you really go forth with it, I will. But why dont we, us right here, why dont we start the revolution. Great things have come out of small packages. Peace, Malandoris
Don't diss the hackers, they are the only ones who made any serious counter-cultural progress in recent years, with the development of Linux, Firefox, FreeBSD and other open-source goodies.
I think that would probably be the only way to start it, considering there are too few in the places where there are hippies. If we start one somehow, and everyone on this site does it, once we get big enough for people outside the site to see us, more will join it. It'd be hard though, considering we're scattered all over the country.
i wonder how many of you would welcome a draft just to help bring the movement back. what do you know, hippies need nixon.
