I guess thats easier when youre not suffering with a serious illness Ill get back up i guess. Im just on a break. I got ill just after i was arrested and so its a sensible point to bow down for a while i think Youre right, of course
After the 1960s blew over I think people, for the most part, stopped caring. Nowadays people are just more interested in obtaining as much money as they possibly can so they can buy useless junk to make themselves feel better. I'm sorry if that sounds so bitter, but it really is a pathetic way of living life. There is so much more to life than that, and I wish people would come to realize that. At one time I think people did, but nowadays, not so much. Our country is far from perfect and I think if we all realized that we'd be more inclined to do something about it, but most people are just content with the way things are. In a way, I think people have been brainwashed. They're in robot mode or something. Tools of the government. It's high time that we all start questioning the lifestyles we live and the shit we say: "o.k" to. I think also that a lot of people don't think they can make a difference because when they go to do something they don't see substantial results in their favor. It can be discouraging, but we had less of that attitude and more optimism we'd also be better off. Change would be a bit more attainable.
Because it takes more than one person to make a change in the world and because the biggest fear of human beings is being alone.
I think it's because people are discouraged. They've made it so hard to be heard. The pyramid has become so enormous, we, the citizens at the bottom, are not even seen much less heard. It's the one's at the top who have power. Congress is supposed to represent us, but they're out of touch with us. Government has gotten too big. We were better off with tiny democracy. Better a town meeting than the shit we have today. Politicians make change now, not so much us. And those who get up the guts to protest end up doing so at their own risk. The sixties was a great revolution, but the government sent a malicious message that resounds to this day: rock the boat at your own risk. It's dangerous to speak out. Therefore we're in a state of chronic apathy. It's depressing, but I don't think it's impossible to make change. People just need to see what's at stake. We don't want to become a communist country and we still, at least for now, hold the power to stop it.
It's because people are ignorant and apathetic (or both). People don't care anymore because most of them suck.
What is there to protest, the war in Iraq? There's no draft so no one is getting yanked off the street and sent over there. Anyway, when we protest it's because we want the goverment to do something, and the goverment will screw up a wet dream so why bother.
"In theory, theory and practice are the same thing. But in practice, they are not." I think everyone wants to change the world, everyone is trying to change the world, but that we're all in a very difficult situation. Your average person, what can they do? It seems money rules the world so if we save away some money maybe we'll have power to do something - but do what? Donate to a charity, adopt an orphan? Most of us can't even save money and when we do it's so much easier to go all-out on Christmas for our loved ones that it is to remember the starving kids in Afrika, and how all that foreign aid usually gets swept up by corrupt governments anyways. Say we're one of the lucky few growing mass amounts of weed in California, we have mass amounts of cash but none of it can be on record. Those people take vacations. What else could they do? Build a school in Argentina? I wouldn't even know how to start doing that. Then legal money, that's so hard to get that once you do get it there's always one more upgrade to buy before you start thinking about sharing. The 80 gig iPod, the new Razr, the 2008 Roadster, the adjacent property... we always feel just below Okay money-wise. We're all so insecure and unsafe. Mostly, the answers are just blurry. No one knows what to do nor do they have the means to do it. But everyone does want change.... that's my guess. Even those horrible, horrible, Like omg wtf were u doin last nite with boby hes so hottt!!!! ummm, jeeeaalus! They want change, too...
Here is an interesting sample question: What would you do if you had one million tax free dollars obtained legally? What would you do with one million illegal dollars? What would you seriously do? I might buy a jaguar, invest a couple 100,000 here and there... there's no point in giving it away because what difference will it really make, right? Or maybe I'd buy a small hotel in Belize and relax my life away... You'd need a really solid plan to make use of any amount of money - at least an effective use of it. I'd be fine with 100,000 for my plan, at least to get started... but that ain't easy for a 19 year old boy, nor anyone. But it's a serious question, look how stuck we are... money, money, money. Money isn't real! Every country on this planet is in debt... where's all the money? It doesn't exist! And even if we had it what would we do? What could we do? Cancer research? I can tell you right now without any research the best way to cure cancer is stop putting all these toxins into our environment!
Not much individually unless their example is worthy of repeating. While I applaud some of our progress as a species, especially our ability to communicate our concepts, I can't help but lament us for learning so much the hard way. One beauty of America is being able to buy a section of land, put a fence around it, and live pretty much as you please. This is also the case with many of the intentional communities. Still, such a community most often requires a team effort. The down side is that the property would have to be owned and taxed, so it would have to play by the rules or be invaded by the government. Such zones are not sovereign but offer the nearest compromise. While it is romantic to think of buying an island, declaring it a nation and legalizing pot. The reality is that a boat load of pirates, organized criminals or lawyers could descend on you and steal it all away. Having the protection of America is a double-edged sword. Especially since the thugs stealing your stuff are sometimes wearing a uniform. Still, an intentional community can be had with enough drive. I've been considering it for years now. I almost bit on 122 acres in south Alabama for $86K but discovered it was near a pulpwood plant and a number of chicken farms. I hope to retire into an aquaculture community and raise seafood while teaching history and manual arts. Ah to dream. Still, I'm closer to realizing it now than I have ever been, so it's creeping back to the front of the folders. I'm experimenting with water recycling, air flow and energy reduction with the house we have now on our acre of hillside. I'm about to invest in energy augmentation when I'm convinced the right deal can be found (solar power is in flux now). And I'm still experimenting with steam engines, a personal hobby. I'm building a new one out of stainless steel and hope to use ethanol burners for the boiler. A solar boiler is just too much to hope for. This one will be a low-pressure design with a larger bore and piston. I'm not trying to light a neighborhood, so a 50-75 psi design should totally kick arse at 90-110 psi. I've learned a LOT about water quality in steam engines lately and plan to figure out an atmospheric condenser so I can reclaim the steam to source the demineralized water supply. Off on a tangent again!! CF
Its depends where you look. If all you're doing is going to malls and other places of entertainment, of course you're not going to see the activism taking place. The mainstream media barely reports it for obvious reasons. You have to LOOK for it. It's out there and it's growing. You gotta know where to look and what to google!
My opinion, like many others, is that the average person doesn't think they can make a difference. They mean well, but what can they do? Why bother trying to do something when they can shove the world problems to the back of their minds and live their 'important' lives, spending and enjoying the money they earn from their 9-5 jobs? Leaving all the problems for their children and children's children to deal with. But then again, if 99% of the population believed they could make a difference, a difference would be made. Maybe even if 25% of the population believed it.. I don't know. I think people think they're alone in wanting change. Of course they're not alone, but it's a fact we (the people wanting to change the world) are widely spread out. And it's scary standing up for what you believe in, all alone. Life is short, and one day everyone alive today won't be. By then it'll be too late to make a change. What will the people alive then do?
i think most people buy into false religion or some other group for solace and a sense of having a purpose. Other people are just completely brain dead superficial robots. they go to parties buy name brand bullshit for looks sake and buy into television as a means of information and amusement. I find most people hopelessly hopeful that we have some higher purpose. We are all animals no better or worse than the roadkill you pass on the way to your meaningless job
And dont forget .Zanex.Prosac.Valium.etc...How are these people suppose to stand up for something.Hell most americans are bearly cohernt. Look at history.People are easier to control when their hungry ,scared ,sick ,and poor...now we just need to add sedated.
That's true. Everyone is supposed feel happy. Tell you what if you've ever been hungry...you don't get fooled as easily as those who have never been hungry. Thing is not many have been there.
How do you stand up for yourself when you are hungry or have no house? It's a basic feature of toture techniques. You deprive the subject of basic human needs and soon he becomes powerless to resist. Why do you think the power elite is so hesitant to give us free universal health care? They fear that once people don't have to worry about food or housing, they will actually begin to care about other issues like civil rights and the environment... People do not care about other people anymore. Capitialism creates this seperation of human beings, this "that's his business" mentality. Believe me, I believe in freedom just as much as the next guy, but it's developed past that idea and into this "Well why should I help him? He hasn't done anything for me!" mindset that Americans fall into, this false sense of lack of responsiblity for anyone else besides ourselves...
Yes, thats right. People dont care for other people... they are too lazy to do something because nobody has done anything for them... and nothing change. I think that if the people who really care about the others were organiced, we coud make a difference!
Ignorance, distractions, apathy/laziness, learned helplessness are all factors, but those are just excuses for the real problem, which I agree is the lack of personal responsibility. However, I think more people stand up for more than you give them credit, and thanks to the internet, we now have a powerful tool with which to band together, stay informed, and bounce ideas off each other. You gotta dig a little, but it's out there, and when enough of us accept responsibility, and act accordingly, without focusing on the futility of the situation, we'll get 'er done...
Because if you never give up and really belive in what you fight for, you will get suicidal with time and passion.
True.But..... Out of sight and out of minde. You can turn a T.V and a computer off. What do you do when you come across something you dont wanna hear or see?
