Want to own the ocean, prove you have a claim to it. A shark has a right to live, but most sharks do not destroy innocent lives in order to maintain dominence, they are only interested in sustaining their lives, they don't wish to own the ocean... only live and survive.

Wow. That like made no sense in context to the conversation or my quote. Who claimed to own the ocean? I certainly didn't. Who claimed that sharks killed innocent lives to maintain power? I didn't.

All I said was that if you didn't want to get bit or eaten stay out of the ocean because *gasp* sharks live in the ocean. Don't whine about how evil the sharks are because they attack people in the ocean. Stay away from their homes.

    From Wikipedia:

"They (dolphins) are found worldwide, mostly in the shallower seas of the continental shelves, and are carnivores, mostly eating fish and squid. "

I have always had a great respect for the king of the sea and I believe that every creature deserves the same repect, whether great or small.

In the words of the great Chief Seattle:
Treat the Earth, and all that dwell there-on with respect

I give sharks, crocodiles, salt water alligators and komodo dragons the same consideration they give me. Zero. Sharks are like humans in that they routinely kill one another. Apparently their nervous systems, and pain threshholds, are quite different from ours, since they will continue trying to feed after being seriously wounded.

I also don't like grizzly bears and cougars when they're up close and personal, for the simple reason that they might kill and eat me, given the chance. Probably because bears and cougars are a lot closer to me (Family Mammalia), I don't feel the same deep seated revulsion I feel toward a mako or a great white. That doesn't mean I go hiking the trails in British Columbia at night by myself and/or without bear (pepper) spray.

i care about sharks. it's sad how as humans we don't like anything that has power over us, because we want to be the top predator. maybe if everyone took the time to read about and understand sharks' behavior, we could avoid putting ourselves in situations where attacks are inevitable. we have to realize that we are the only species with the ability to rationalize, and to sharks we are simply food. they learn by tasting, and usually will not eat a human after they take a bite and realize he is not a fish. if they do eat humans, it is probably because we have taken too many fish from their habitat and they are starving. i think that as organisms with the gift of thought, it is our responsibility to do everything we can think of to live in harmony with all creatures.

RIP Steve Irwin, the man who was passionate about this concept

I liked the part in The Sea Wolf, by Jack London (fiction) where sailors capture a shark that has just taken someone's foot off. The sailors sharpen a stake at both ends and shove it in the shark's mouth (London doesn't explain how they manage this) so that it can't close, then throw it back in the ocean to starve.

As an occasional bodysurfer when visiting southern California, I've got no use for these bastards (sharks). They seem to be uncommon in the shallow water near the beach at Playa del Rey, near L.A. airport, as well as at other beaches. Dolphins are very common close to shore, so the water can't be too polluted.

When I visited Santa Cruz Island off of Ventura, I had a hard time figuring the scuba divers in the area. That area, Scorpion Cove, is a seal rookery, and seals are a prey species for great white sharks! So diving in a seal rookery area doesn't make a lot of sense to this cowboy.

    Thanks, Panda.
I won't say that I hope you meet up with a shark the next time you're bodysurfing. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. But just think for a minute, think what it would be like.

It's not my planet, but it is my body, and I don't want the supremely painful death of being eaten alive by a shark or any other carnivore.
