I know that's a broad question but it can be pain killers, marijuana, psychedelics, cocaine, whatever? I used to do all of it but not really in the last ten years or so. I rarely consume enough alcohol to get a buzz anymore. I still smoke cigarettes and I can't live without my coffee but I guess I stopped seeing the appeal so I'm wondering what it is that still makes people do it. I wish I wanted to honestly. I had some edibles a few months ago and its was nice and mellow and I didn't eat a whole pizza afterwards so I saw no ill effects from taking it. Better still, my leg wasn't hurting and I had no trouble going to sleep. My brother in law just got popped with a bunch of weed and he was asking me at Thanksgiving to go out in the desert and look for peyote but from what research I did there's none to be found anymore. Glad I didn't follow him out into the desert because he's a dumb ass. The only threads that I have seen out number the drug ones are the weird ass sex ones.
The first drug I ever did was LSD. Back in my young, wild, and stupid days. It was a mind expanding experience that I do not regret... and I'll never repeat. By the time I got around to weed... it was sort of 'yawn'. BUT.. after decades of no illegal drug usage, these days I'm looking forward to the day when herbage is legal everywhere. It's a much healthier pain med than the poison that a doc prescribes. I'm just not willing to risk my farm to grow it until then. The minute it is legal, though... I'll convert this entire acreage to Mother Nature's herb.
Mind Expansion and Sensory Enhancement would be my general answer. Although some drugs like alcohol, I like more for the anxiolytic effects.
I don't really like drugs. I like alcohol as a social lubricant but I'm trying to curb that, it always amplifies my anxiety x 10 the day after a night of drinking. I haven't cared for recreational legal drugs, ie pills, since I was a teenager, I've seen too many people take a bad path with pills. Although I wouldn't mind getting a script for Xanax to take the couple of times a month I decide to be social to help with that aforementioned social anxiety. I love and respect psychedelics as a tool to reach a greater understanding of life. I don't really view them as drugs. I also haven't touched them since having a child, it would really suck to get an emergency call from the babysitter in the middle of a trip. I was never interested in the harder stuff. I'll always love marijuana but it doesn't do a lot for me recreationally anymore. I'm more interested in its medicinal value.
The best thing about drugs other than alcohol is the lack of calories! Otherwise, I might just stick with vodka shots all the time.
Well, i never used drugs in any form. I think now a days a common dieses all over the world spread, its Tension and Depression. In the world, the most selling medcine are "Anti-Depresent". I think we must calm down and take over our problems and never get tension. I heared from a doctor that tension is affect your "Liver" first. So take care of yourself, if you are healthy, all the problems will be solved.
The desire to change ones reality is age old , I believe. Won't list the myriad ways different societies have used various & sundry items to alter consciences. The point is that human nature has and will continue to do so. The various psychedelics introduced in the early 60s-70s, ( speaking of the modern age), helped us to get beyond the 'Leave it to Beaver'--head in the sand understanding of the societal inequities of the past and to introduce the ability to see them. There were some relevant discoveries made during the 60s-70s by those who now had this ability to "see" the whole of many of the tried and true gimmicks of the ruling class and the roles we were expected to play in our society. Thereafter, those (right now, even) hucksters that arose with their heroin, meth, crack, etc, that ruined and still ruins peoples lives, determined that making money off suckers using their "products" was/is somehow related to the enlightenment that psychedelics seemed to promise back in the day. Can't happen. Of course, like most movements that begin with ideas of societal change, we were co-opted, reviled , and dismissed by the MACHINE and eventually ended up staging events that attempt to recreate the feeling of "the new reality coming." Following the Dead, the Rainbow gatherings, etc. A few communes here and there. The title: why do you like drugs? I still smoke weed as I have since the 60s, but frankly, I'd be terrified to do psychedelics nowadays with all that's transpired over the last 15 years. I can "see" clearly how that would affect me as I'm not too keen on the way our society is run now. To say the least. I'll have to run with---'the bad always drives out the good.' Seen it so many times.
Weed is great for insomnia, I use to be on this two hours of sleep every night for over seven years. Looking back now its a haze and I don't know how I survived with 3 kids. Not sleeping kept me in an emotionally compromised state 24-7. Now I smoke to sleep. It's not the fun thing to do for me, it's more about being necessary.
