This is a question I get asked....almost on a daily basis. And every time I answer it, I am more certain of my own decision. So I want you all to tell me...why do you have dreadlocks? Is it a spiritual practice? Do you just really love the way they look? Are you just lazy and hate washing your hair? I wanna know! Every reason matters because it's a part of the wonderful journey of really appreciating your locks, no matter how simple the reason. Pictures are welcome as well!
i had long hair for over 10 years, and i wanted dreads for years. i,m male and a logger, think i should??
I think if it's something that interests you, you should definitely look into it. What is it that interests you about dreads?
well i,ve always felt i,m meant to be a hippy back in the 70,s(so,s my old lady)and been aganist the sterotypeing of people, prob. because i,m stared at all the time anyway,(i,m long haired long beard biker,i always felt as myself havin dreads too, being the way i wanna look all the way, may as well finish my process. we really live the life too... where/how should i start?
Start by buying a larger helmet for your riding. That's probably going to be your most annoying problem. Seriously, your hat size goes up by 10million. Also: There's a few stickies at the top of this forum. It's where you start.
Well Ive always wanted really long hair, longer than waist length, ever since I was a little kid. I had mid back length hair before I started and it was just too much work trying keep it just right so I didn't get split ends breaking off. I wasn't too keen on keeping my long combed hair, but you couldn't have paid me all the money in the world to go back to short hair either. So I started reading about dreadlocks...you wash your hair and do nothing else to it and they still form? Sounds like the hairstyle for me! Ive always been a type that would rather take the more natural route of things as well so here I am...
Stoner oxy80 definitely read the stickies on the forum. Do some extended research on the method you prefer. I did back combing, it's really up to you on yours. <3 Bunnie
Obligatory nod to the usefulness of searching the forum before starting a new thread as I have answered this same question in a number of others, but I also like to revisit the topic so here I goes... Simple answer: I have locks because I don't comb my hair. Complex answer: I continue to have locks because it is something that I have committed to seeing through. I often get asked if I will ever cut them which is a bit of a silly question because I cannot see into the future, I can only guess. I answer that I will likely cut or trim if they become painful or begin to effect my life in a negative way. There may come a day when I am tired of the difficulty of finding employment with locks, but this is not that day. My general way of thinking also seems to parallel what happens with my hairs: living in the moment, the joy of an adventure, the power of unity, the illusion of control, preconceptions, vanity. Some of these things I didn't realize or think specifically about until after taking the plunge, but they are now a huge part of my life and I am very grateful for the many experiences that I have gone through with/because of my hair. Uhhmm don't you think they should see if they can actually hang with the the 'hairstyle' first?... I didn't have to bump up my hat/helmet size for a while after I stopped combing.
This is why I started this thread. So that we can have a general discussion thread and relate to one another on the similar topic of the beginning of our dread journey's Allow me to point out that you should have protection in the work place (I don't know what you do), but if it ever became a problem, most of your reasoning is directly related to the spiritual practice of having dreadlocks across various religions. I work at a franchise coffee shop and they are adamant protectors of the rights of their employees' religious practice. By law, your workplace cannot force you to remove your dreads. You may already know this and there may be some factors in your case that might interfere as I do not know your situation, but alot of people forget the protection and rights of spiritual practice.
I have dreadlocks because they keep me in mind of a spiritual connection to my ancient soul. And I love dreadlocks.
When I have a job, I'm fine... the issue is getting jobs in the first place, or trying to move up in a corporate environment. I had a shitty front desk job at a gym for about 5years that I quit because I couldn't get promoted. My manager loved me, but didn't want to lose me so I don't think she spoke very loudly on my behalf. The only feedback I would ever get was "we decided to go with someone else" which is no feedback at all. After that I installed Christmas lights which was a blast and I loved both the job and my bosses. Although the money was good, seasonal work like that isn't something you can really live off of all year. Eventually I will need to find another 'real' job but for the time being I am a brofessional downhill skateboarder and couch/hammock surfer
