Why do we say things the way we do and the order in which we say them? Like Salt and pepper instead of Pepper and salt Mustard and Cress instead of Cress and mustard Salt and Vinegar instead of Vinegar and Salt Beans on Toast instead of Toast under Beans Upstairs and Downstairs instead of Downstairs and Upstairs Anymore you can think of?
I Was Always Told That Words Had To Appear In Alphabetical Order......This Applied To The Names Of Company's .......Businesses......And Just About Everything Else...... Cheers Glen.
Back in the 1930's, to prevent corruption, local authorities were required by the government to select suppliers and contractors alphabetically from the telephone books. Companies such as "Young ans sons", soon realized that it would be "Young and great grandsons" before their turn came, so businesses all over the UK were changing their names. Their was an "Ashley Brandon" in almost every town, Then companies realized that the selections did not backtrack, so once selection moved onto "B" they had missed the boat. "Bull and company" soon became flavor of the month. This game of 'cat and mouse' went on for about 30 years.
Husband and wife. Goes to prove that men always come before women. PS,,,,Candy,,,, Don't change the spelling of come this time.
A larger and more interesting discussion of why we say things the way we do has to do with how we interact with other people in general, in my opinion.
