Yeah, a homeless guy asked a woman to buy him a loaf of bread - the cheapest is like 30p, and she refused and told him to get a job.

What's he going to do with it, sell slices of bread for drugs?!

I second that. I've housed and fed at least a dozen homeless folks, and never was robbed. Wish I could say the same about the American government.

I've volunteered at a shelter over Christmas for a few years, and they were all nice people who really appreciated the time people took to help them, and for the company - especially at that time of year.

There are some bastards though, the ones not in the shelters. The ones who aren't looking for help.

That is the flip side to this argument, because whether your a tramp or a CEO, we are all human and some people are nice and some people are characteristically not.

for what it's worth, I agree with you, but maybe to not the same degree.

But I understand what you're getting at.

I think that those who ignore the problem feel that some how they are above ever being in those circumstances. They will never be in a position of not having a safe shelter to be in.

I do think that awareness and compassion are shifting with time and circumstances that are in many cases out of many peoples control now.

What use to be thought of as homeless we drug addicts, mentally challenged or those who "just want to be".

The economy today has forced many people to rethink those notions as for many, being homeless is no more than a pay check away.

The face of homelessness is changing. It is families, it is children.

It does not mean that those who were before the economic down swing were or are or should be viewed as any less deserving of the basic necessities of life but I do think that today people are more aware of how easily it can happen.

Sadly there are going to be far more homeless people in the near future.

Tipsy was the one who declined him 30p. She wasn't making a joke, she was scoffing at his incompetence

Yes, but people don't look at it and say he's a bastard because that is his character - it's; he's a bastard, who's chosen to be homeless through drink or drugs or whatever and will rob you any chance he gets.

Also, your character will have to change living on the streets - think what people will have to put up with, you will have to develop a thick skin and do what you can to survive, because many people won't want to help; they just generalise every homeless person as the same.

I said earlier, people are all different. Not all will be nice, but I hate generalisations.

There are as many arses, if not more, who have a job and a house. Your point?

look all im making is that you should not think to deserve anything if you got yourself homeless. sure i give a coin or 2 but really, most of them are just burnt out crack heads and alcoholics. trying to buy a forty. thats why i ignore most of them

People think the CEO must be a greedy, selfish git because he makes a lot of money. Sometimes generalizations are fine so long as it is based around a group of people the consensus deem as 'evil'.

No, there's not a lot. BTW, what do you have to say about our many government officials that spend thousands of our tax dollars on lunches and dinners? Are you cool with that? When a Safeway sandwich could keep a homeless person alive for less than five bucks? Hello, calling planet earth.

Not greedy. It's usually an entitlement based around the work they do.

I'm saying generalizations are rubbish. There are good tramps and there are bad ones.

It's ironic actually, how the angry mob works. Only a few months ago Wild Flowers said she wanted to try out living on the streets- and the overall reception from this very website was it was dangerous, because of the people and the drugs and the violence

now we are calling that out and the general reaction is that they are all pussycats.

what do you want me to do? give every bum 5$ in chicago? ill be broker than broke. and secondly you dont live here. so stop thinking theres not a lot of assholes bums here

its not my fault the tax payers dont speak up. americans dont have balls anymore so thats why the government took over

again. i dont care how people live their lives. i care about how i direct my personal life so i dont end up like that. period.

It's like when one person says their vote doesn't count, yea one person may not make a difference but when 70 million people think the same exact thing it begins to add up. They're not "bums", or I suppose the 10-15% of people unemployed right now are also bums. Once you're homeless it's pretty hard to break the cycle. Not to mention every single person here would drink if they were homeless. A 40 of malt liquor cost $2.50 and will get you drunk, which is especially beneficial when it's cold out since booze makes you feel warm. If you collect $5-6 a day panhandling why wouldn't you buy beer since it only takes $3-4 to get enough food to feel full for the day.
