I don't hate you because you're a hippie I don't like you because you stereotype yourself and everyone else.
Hippies are so rare nowdays, atleast where i live, so you can hardly call it a mainstream stereotype.
I don't have such an experience, but once,on my birthday, me and my hippie company were listen to music and dancing around one little garden. The people looked stare at us and laughted, but we don't care.Sometimes the people dislike the original and different of them. But there are also many people who likes me because I'm a hippie, because I'm different.
I get it sometimes. About a week ago I was at some carnival when a kid came up to me and said "Nice bell bottoms fag. Get a haircut you look like a dirtbag." As usual I just walked away but this kid kept bugging me. After about an hour of harrassing he ended up being the one who looked like an idiot. I wouldn't worry about it, as long as you're not getting your ass kicked or anything whats the harm.
If you're talking to me, he was wearing the same thing most kids wear... just a polo shirt and some khakis with his adidas sneakers. I think I was wearing either this or something real close to it. Oh and thats me...
I was hoping he wore a Ghetto outfit with the pants hanging way below the pubic line and some funky boxer shorts above his belly botton.
So, what you wear really doesn't reflect who you are in my opinion. It sounds like in a lot of these cases the folks really weren't being made fun of for being "hippies" but were being made fun of for wearing clothes that really stand out against the grain. I think there is a huge difference in being a so called "hippie" and dressing like one, same as there is a huge difference in getting made fun of for being a "hippie" verses getting made fun of for dressing unusual.
I get some friendly Virginians yelling "Hey there, sweetie, do you believe in free love? Hardy har har har..." About labeling… a certain amount of conformity is necessary, or normal, within the counterculture, if only because of the fact that people with similar viewpoints tend to manifest those viewpoints similarly. A label for a group of people with similar interests leads to a sort of togetherness that I think is necessary to endure all of the taunts and jeers. If you plan on surviving outside of the mainstream, you usually need some help from like-minded individuals, or I’ve found that it’s easier that way. Rejecting and trying to live separate from society is a very difficult thing to do, but it’s even harder to do alone. Community and unity is needed to achieve any sort of goals- or even to survive, sometimes. I think that attacking one another about labels is one-upmanship and pseudo-intellectuality and hypocritical...
