theres a few songs i like... but making comments like 'their songs are indepth' being the reason people dont like them; if i had never heard phish before and someone said that to me, that just makes phish seem like a band for arrogant "indepth" people, and that does turn people off to certain types of music: the fans... for example, im generally turned off to all rap/ hiphop b/c of some off the dumbass white wannabe gangstas walking around
you don't think the Grateful Dead get indepth? if not, your out of your mind. thats why i love these bands, they get deep into the music that we all leave saturated in it.....like hits of LSD these notes travel through my mind and take me places very few bands can.....i enjoy all types of music.....but i love indepth jams, that take you out of this world, take you around and bring you home safely......
y'know phish was a great thing in 92-95 as the dead express was running out of steam. Phish was the "hot new act" who captured the energy and sometimes the full blown vibe the Dead had spread for so long. The Dead were tired. Very tired. Phish was young and hungry.
thats a cheap low blow....to say the only reason Phish made it was because the Dead were losing steam. Phish had been building a following since 1986, as this was the year they really became the Phish we know, and no longer just a "local" band. They were somthing else. And those who claim that Phish only made it big after Jerry died and the Grateful Dead disbanded.....your wrong. Phish was playing 16,000-20,000 person venues in 1994. Lets give credit where credit is due. Phish got big, because of amazing song writing, determination, and amazing performing.....mike, trey, page, and fishman are all amazing players and they deserve more than a cheap title like HOT NEW ACT, because they were kicking ass from 84 to 04........
Damn picky heads what was going on was the end-all be-all big time jammers were losing their footing after unleashing this amazing vibe that Phish tapped into. Cheese did the same thing as Phish lost their footing. Not sure who is tapping it directly now, we might be beyond the big two or three jam band years. It might be a regional/ smaller phenomeon because SO MANY people are channeling that. Phish was lucky in that they were ready to break big when the vibe seekers started checking out the college town band the northeast heads were raving about. THey were blessed with the restlessness of certain heads not willing to have their 37th last show, who were looking for a stronger channel. Those same people moved on as Phish got caught up in the brain side and kind of forgot about the heart side. I am not saying they only made it because of the deterioration of the Dead, but a ready-made traveling following (blessing and curse) helped it blow up fast, again, blessing and curse. No value judgement. A simple statement. Band A alienates heads who find band B. Band A could be GD, Phish, Cheese; Band B Phish, Cheese, New Monsoon. It looks to be a development cycle for bands of a certain level. For the record, Oct 95: 3000 seat hall (which was nice). Closest concert competition was NIN and David Bowie 45 miles away. In other words, not much competition.
^^ that "whatever" would be why people don't like the Phish heads & so many won't get beyond that to the music. IT'S ALL THE SAME VIBE........
i honnestly dont think i've ever heard 1 phish song..ever..but i've heard theyre alot like the dead..so i dont ever want to hear them that shits just incredibly boring & annoying..& the whole "scene" is just dumb what a waste of time
you are such a Virgo! your like one big stereotype! we seem to clash....and if astrology has taught us anything Aries and Virgo clash, hard. But you know. We like different stuff. I'm glad. I'll see you at a Kimock show or a Dead show. I won't see you at a Phish show. Who cares. But the idea, that your still supporting the logic of not liking music because of the fan base blows my mind. I've heard of "sticking to your guns", but you've got realize by now that this is irrational thought! there is no logic to not likeing music because of other people who like it. For Example: (this is not you in particular, but a hypothetical situation) Do you not like the Rolling Stones because there fans are for the most part white, middle-class, middle-age yuppy people? If you say yes; that is rediculous. If you say "i don't like the rolling stones because there music is not of my taste." that makes sense. but, WHATEVER, you go your way and i'll go mine.....
S&S, it wasn't me that said I didn't go because of fans, so please get off that. I simply understand those who do feel that way. (and yuppies are a buzz kill. pick yer venue well) your original comment about it was to madcrappie. I'm a small scene chick. I prefer that raw sometimes sloppy birthing energy given in those situations. I still see the band when they "grow up" but not nearly as much (ie SCI, Yonder), since I'm probably on no-one-you-ever-heard-of "tour" (is it a tour if the venues are within 2 hours of each other? or is that just catching shows? ) I like small shows, nights when half the people are stuck at home because of snow, whatever. Give me a band that can play for 17 people as if there were 1700, and I'll show you the next big one. That's heart, soul and the vibe. That is what it is about to me. Other people get other things out of it. Heck, some people like "Corina." and for the record, I would NOT pay to see the Stones, although I did get a nice show in my yard one year as they played the college stadium. Sheryl Crow's percussionist was really nice in that situation. personally, Phish is nice enough, they are extremely talented, but whatever part of teh vibe they are pulling isn't "my medicine." glad it works for other people, becuse even a really bad jam band (pick your local painful WP/ Phish/Dead cover band) is better than that stuff on the commerical machine radio.
shit you guys both small scenes and large scenes are both great! But the scene depends largely on the people that attend. And the music a band puts out is what attracts certain attendees. The thing about Phish is that they attracted everybody and thats why the scene got so big! And thats one of the main reasons behind Phish's break up or just break hopefully. They couldnt handle the scene any longer. It was too much of an irritation towards the end. Just read all the interviews. The reason the scene got so big was because Phish catered to so many different musical tastes. They made many discoveries and did reach heights never before reached in music with their jams. and their scene was the shit as a result of their explorations in my opinion! On the other hand I cant stand going to WSP anymore because of the way their scene (music) has evolved. And I never could stand the OAR, Guster, DMB type scenes because of the people that herded towards the bands as a result of the music. It all goes back to the music and how it was marketed in DMB's case. I'm sure the GD scene was the best ever and I would do anything to go back to the early seventies when they were just then getting into their most memorable phase after leaving all the rest that survived the hippie era behind in search of the universal vibe. The true fans I suspect are attracted to jam bands because they feel that they are taking part in the exploration process. And the arena/theatre/wherever is the vessel and the band members are the pilots. For me Cheese provides the smoothest ride!
oh as for seeing the Stones, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Santana, Jethro Tull and other similar acts go see them while you still have a chance! who cares about the scene. All these guys are worth seeing even if you do have to pay mucho dinero. Theres not much time left. Ofcourse theres no question when considering seeing all the old jammers. you know who I'm talking about. dont miss them.
I 've done arenas, but I think Red Rocks is a big as I want to go. Festivals exempted. that's enough people for this chica. I'm trying to peg the largest show I've seen and I 'm thinking it was a Texas Jam or some such. 17k with the dead? not sure. I left the Jam early (I'd snuck out) i'll tell you, 3k with Phish was one of those "us" moments, and I did get to hear While My guitar Gently Weeps live, so not a total wash for me. (Actually we developed a verb for our house after the tapes arrived: Antelope: verb, play a song over and over until the other residents threaten harm) And we had a cat named possum. So Phish was around and in the family lexicon. But I have had to drag people out to shows to prove there is life after Dead. I think some Phishheads will be the same way. I hope somone drags them to Railroad Earth or New Monsoon. Heck even Umphrey's. I've not been 50 percent of an audience but I have been 1/10th. I always feel so bad for the band. A band should be outnumbered!
Scents&Sublte one of the best shows ever was Revolutionary Side Effects show, with me and my friend as the only audience members, in an old Los Angeles Museum.... Drumminmama I've not been 50 percent of an audience but I have been 1/10th. I always feel so bad for the band. A band should be outnumbered! I feel the same way. a band should not have to play for an audience that does not even equal the band's size...but when ever i see a good band with no support, i go a rock my ass off for them....to give back a little of what there dishing out in tons......
and that is the sign of true channeler musicians if they can do it without a huge push back from a room. it really sucks if they listed me and no one shows up. I'll go back to the door and pay.
