Interviewer: "So Frank, you have long hair. Does that make you a woman?"

Frank Zappa: "You have a wooden leg. Does that make you a table?"

Ok, I'm sure someone else said it, but I should be doing homework instead of reading all 27 pages so I'll say it to:

Hair gets longer as a person grows older. It's like the 5th law of hairodynamics or something. That's why people have long hair.

Mine doesn't. As a matter of fact, it hasn't changed it's length in over 20 years. If I cut it, it goes right back to the same length and stops.

That's pretty nifty. I never thought about it, but mine had stopped when it reached my waist although I know a girl whose hair reached the floor three times over (she braided then folded it four times so that it never dragged). Strange that I never thought of hair length as genetic.

I think hair usually has a "maximum length" where it stops growing and eventually falls out and is replaced by a new hair. Most folks will be unable to achieve floor length without retaining fallen hairs in dreads. I haven't cut mine in a decade and its length rests somewhere between shoulder blades and belt. It doesn't grow any longer but it's still a decent length.

In 1969, in an Amsterdam Hotel, John Lennon and Yoko Ono did not get out of bed for a week.
They held signs that read "Bed Peace" and "Hair Peace."

    I have hair peace.

I'll pass on the topic of enchanting musk!

I imagine the first hippies grew their hair long partly to stand out from the "squares", and as an act of rebellion.

These days you don't have to be a hippie to grow your hair long, e.g. you could be a biker or a metaller or a goth, so it's not an exclusively hippie trade mark anymore.

Here in the U.K. it's now illegal for an employer to discriminate against a male candidate with long hair due to the sexual equality laws. There was a test case about it not so long ago.

So hopefully the days of being lynched for it like in Easy Rider are past.

No they aren't. You don't even know all of them, you can't really say that just because they were curious as to why hippies have long hair. I think hippies have long hair because it's just something natural.

i thought it was meant to contrast with really short hair, which has connotations of military service.

You could also ask why people wear hats, or rings or only wear black socks. It's a matter of choice, what people want to do, what they feel comfortable with and what they like!

A friend of mine used to say he could only have his hair long because he felt uncomortable with short hair, vice versa with friends with short hair!

don't you guys have something better to talk about... ya know... something more important than your fucking hair?!? Do actually somebody really care about your hair in first place... nobody gives a flying fuck if you hair is long or not... you are not in the 60' anymore, we are in 2008, wake up.

I still can't believe this is one of the most active topic... hippies actually CARE about image maybe more than the sheeps.
