Trolling and catfishing are downsides to anonymity imo. Benefits to anonymity for me are more like you don't have to watch every word you say in case an employer is scouring your profile, no targeting ads, spam, etc. I can talk on subjects I'm knowledgeable and passionate about like say psychedelics, where as most people irl I know, don't enjoy to discuss such topics in length, if at all.
You can reply to my comment within the hour, but it spoils all the fun of composing a letter and waiting weeks for the postman to bring a reply. I wonder how Eugene would have reacted to an email from Tatiana.
I really meant forums in general, but yes, this one is not immune either. It used to be much more lively here but I also enjoy the more familiar, close-knit community that has replaced the more broad and shallow array of members and topics. They both had their benefits.
to be fair, there were familiar, close knit communities here before too, just each subforum was its own community rather than the whole website. back in those days i almost never left random thoughts, and most other random thoughts posters also posted there exclusively. i agree that both had their benefits.
So did i. I didn't arrive here until 2016 so i wouldn't know how it was. This might have been my 5th or 6th forum i joined. I do find a good portion of the regular characters here pretty interesting in their posting style. You included.

Oh Pugsy, it is just as well that I understand Viking. lol Some of the British forums are just TOO BORING.
What did you have for dinner - Boring What kind of soap do you use - Boring Yep, we know. I joined for some fun, not to be bored to death.
To actually talk out loud about some bi sexual activity I have enjoyed many years ago. A confession I guess.
Well in 2008 I found myself in NYC at Strawberry Fields & was introduced to some ol' hippies via le bong & le declaration of my having been John Lennon's reincarnation. WhenI returned home to quiet lil country Indiana I began to research John & the hippies & found myself here. Been a member ever since, in one incarnation or another. Grew up with this place. Only forum I've ever really been on for any real extent of time.
