What led to the Five Civilized tribes to adopt slavery? This is from a few years back when some Cherokee Freedmen(Black slave descendants of the Cherokee)were trying to get recognized as members of the Cherokee.
How much did these tribes becoming mixed with whites lead to them adopting slavery and other parts of white culture of that time? In other words, were some of the Native American slave masters part white? So did they inherit slaves from their white side?
The human chattel of The Five Nations was more about prestige. A war prize. The conquord peoples were incorporated into the tribe and their decendants were members of the tribe.
Trying to think of a place in the pre-industrialized world where slavery never took place.... Aaaaannnnnnnd I've got nothing.
Interesting racial innuendo. So tell us how did the African Warlords who enslaved fellow blacks in Africa before the Europeans arrive come to be? And why are Africans still enslaving Africans now?
There were groups that practiced slavery on the west coast of modern-day Canada. I want to say the Blackfoot, but could be wrong on that. Other groups in the Ontario/Quebec/upstate NY region also practiced forms of slavery, but it was more that war captives were adopted into the group, not that they were treated like slaves in the way we would most likely think of slaves.
Just to clarify. My question is more about why did Native Americans such as the Five Civilized tribes adopt the practice of Black slavery? That's why I included that video about Cherokees owning Black slaves. That's also why I asked if these tribes adopting Black slaves was influenced by them becoming more mixed with whites?
Reading up on this a little the NAs always had slaves. Even before the Europeans. However after the Europeans started taking their lands the 5 tribes adopted the idea of trying to make friends with the Europeans by assimilating their practice of using black slaves as a PR method of trying to keep the Europeans from siezing the rest of their land. I'm sure there is other historical accounts but that was the brief overview I found.
Native Americans liked European culture; that's why they adopted and appropriated so much of it into their own cultural heritage. Natives loved guns, horses, liquor, and even Sacajawea named her baby Jean Baptiste. White Europeans traded lots with the native Americans, so it's no surprise they also traded slaves as well.
Wasn't the white man's way of life forced on some tribes? I know the Spanish did this with their missionaries in an attempt to "civilize" those poor "savages" who were too "stupid" to live properly. I'm sure there were some slave-owning Spaniards and American Colonists who taught them that civilized people keep other people in chains.
