Why are shorts for girls shorter than shorts for boys?

I wonder if my kid ever asks me how I'll answer this question. What would you say?

I think it's one of those gender benders... it's just another weird norm. Like why do women have long hair and men crop theirs short? That isn't a very strict norm; I think the shorts one is probably more commonly adhered to.

It probably has to do with women being the object of affection (to put it a nice way...). Women are objectified since who knows when... So when they expose themselves in that way such that you can see more leg, I guess what I see is the image personified. I see the object of my desire too. So it's a double-edged sword...

 

It's probably because blokes balls would hang out wearing short shorts.

I don't want to delve too far into objectification and say the oppressive patriarchy has forced it upon you but really what other reason is there? Granted men's couldn't (or at least shouldn't) be any shorter for the sake of decency but girls' shorts could be the same length as boys. But they're nice to look at and we want them to show off skin from a young age so they'll continue when they're all grown up.
I guess it's the way of the world and they've gotta learn about it sooner or later.

No one is forcing anyone to wear anything. If women want to start wearing longer shorts they ought to do so. Some do.

Yea I wonder this myself. I am a guy who prefers to wear shorter shorts, if it goes to my knees, it's too long. I was once substitute teaching and I saw a boy who had his shots hiked up s you couldn't see under his long shirt, I confronted him and he said "the girls can do it, why can't I". He got me on that one.

 

Looks rather pansyfied, or like something peewee herman would do.
More seriously, I put on my old shorts I wore back in the 80's when I was young and trim, never thinking about how it would look in my 50's. One day I walked by a mirror and saw myself. Still can't get that horrifying image outa' my head. I went out and got some of those longer shorts you see these days. As a side benefit, nothing hangs out. Never met a woman who had that problem.
