Ppl don't usually ask why someone is too thin unless they are prepared for the dreadful truth - that they are likely dying of AIDS, Cancer, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or some other incurable malady. Yes, there are some medical reasons why ppl are fat - but the majority of overweight or obese ppl don't have such a medical condition - it is just a matter that they would rather eat a high calorie, high fat tasty diet than give it up. I don't mean to be mean. It is a sincere question because I too love all those foods I was raised on but have learned as an adult that they are not healthy in the amounts that most ppl in our culture eat them. Now and then I will have a slice of pizza or a donut or mayonnaise or butter, but I don't keep such in my house and I rarely eat them. My discipline is not all that great - I fight with the urge to eat tasty food all the time (Chocolate is the worst) but I consider the alternative worth it.
OK so everyone that is skinny has an incurable malady, Shale I have to say that I have read many of your posts and enjoyed them, but this just seems like a bit much. I guess I just take this extremely personal since I struggle with an addiction myself.
Gad, this is worse than a court deposition not to offend someone. Of course I did not mean EVERYONE in my statement. There are some skinny ppl who are perfectly healthy and that is just the way their body is built. And just like 'fat,' 'skinny' is hard to define without going into specific body mass index numbers (which are also under dispute) So, this is what I actually meant: "Ppl don't usually ask why someone is too thin unless they are prepared for the dreadful truth - that many of them are likely dying of AIDS, Cancer, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or some other incurable malady."
I believe the major reason people are fat is because they consume too much sugar. Also, too many refined, processed carbs. I wouldn't be surprised if so much of the food supply being tainted with GMOs has a lot to do with it, coupled with hormones in the food and synthetic estrogens in plastic food containers containing BPA.
To answer the original question: because of their lifestyle, which is their choice. (Certain medical conditions exempted.) What really bothers me is obesity in children. They don't choose to be fat. They have to deal with the consequences and medical problems because of their irresponsible parents. To overweight parents who allow their children to get fat: it doesn't matter what you like to do and how you live your life, you are responsible for your child's well-being. Increasing their health risk is not it. You wouldn't buy cigarettes or alcohol for your 5 year old just because you like them yourself, would you?
Was in great shape 'til I hit my 40's. Now I take medication that contributes to my weight. I wouldn't mind being thin again, but I'm not willing to give up my love of food to get there. So I simply accept my size and live with it.
As someone who was and still is (working on it) fat, I can tell you that most of us do care about what we've become. It's so easy to be lazy and put on weight and it takes 100x more effort to take it off and it takes a long time. If you're lazy to begin with and if you're self conscious because of how overweight and tired you are all the time, most likely you're also depressed and self defeatist and you don't think you can do it. You don't know how many times I said tomorrow I'll eat better, tomorrow I'll exercise. Being overweight makes you depressed and unmotivated, which makes it even more difficult to decide to do something active (which a naturally thin person might not understand. Btw I hate the word skinny because thin people don't like being called skinny any more than overweight people don't like being called fat AND thin and skinny are two different things). Tell me I'm making excuses, but I'm not. I'm doing something about my fat, I'm just trying to legitimately explain the OP's question on why people are fat and letting him know that MOST of us DO care that we're fat. It's just more difficult to change if it's all you know and all you have ever been.
People have to live their own lives. You can't make them care about the same things you do. They deserve their privacy.
Of course no one said anything about forcing overweight ppl to thin down. They are free to live their own lives. But when any of us go out in public, there is no privacy
