The way I see it, these prisoners are being given an opportunity to work, build job skills/experience, gives them something to keep them busy and out of trouble. I've seen a documentary on this before and many of the prisoners are grateful to have this line of work. Also, we shouldn't need to pay prisoners $8/hour considering their living expenses aren't nearly as high as those of the non-convict. They pay for their food, their lawyer fees if they have them, and that's about it. They don't have to pay rent, utility bills, car insurance, gas, etc etc etc.

Also, this guy kept saying they got payed 0.60 cents per day when right behind him, the screen says 0.60 cents per hour. Maybe I missed something, but....

Anyway, yeah, I mean it sucks but at least they're being given some opportunities to better themselves. Their time in prison isn't about building their finances, it's about building their character.

When I was in a psych facility, dodging the law, they had a program called "Incentive Therapy" where some of us were able to do odd tasks for the same sort of wages. I started in the greenhouse at 0.25 per hour which allowed me to readily feed my post-meth chocolate jones. They were so impressed with my work that I was promoted to the craft shop where I made wooden doll heads for 0.35 per hour. Then I got a real break and went to work in the leather shop for a whopping 0.47 per hour. Granted, this was the early 80s.

Since everything else was covered, my meals, lodging and entertainment the only thing that would have ruined it would have been taking up smoking, a hard habit to afford at less than 50 cents an hour. If the convicts are working and doing a decent job, 0.60 an hour keeps them from having to extort canteen money from their families. The alternative is letting them languish in a cell and learn all manner of new ways to rip people off when they finally get out. Letting them work is a privilege.

Prison is supposed to suck. The biggest outrage should be that our prisons have a drug problem. Such a thing should not be possible.

whole foods is totally messed up in so many ways. its not even close to what it pretends to be. they carry all kinds of everything. not that they don't carry anything really organic by any reasonable deffinician, its just that they carry a lot of overpriced things, who's claim to organicness, is dubious at best. there's just no guarantee of truthfulness to the claims of anything sold there. that being said, they're no worse the off the wall mart. just on average more expensive. one can do better, without paying near as much, at trader joe's. which is still corporate retailing with all that implies. it just doesn't make the same kind of big deal about being something it isn't, to get people to spend more then they need to. although if you're careless you can there too.

wall mart is cheap because it damd near only uses underpaid labor, under slave like conditions and possibly outright slavery from its suppliers.
whole foods just gouges the customer.

compared to either of them, or even most mainstream food chains, tj's is at least i suspect, as close to reasonable at both ends.
there's another "of course", which is, that when it comes to anything to do with money, anything can change at any time.

So you advocate slavery? If this continues large portions of the US poor will be put in prison work camps just so rich businesses can have cheap labor. Already the US has the number one supple of incarcerations.

Fuck the prisoners, I just don’t like whole foods because they don’t have most of the items I purchase at Shaws, Stop and Shop, and Market Basket

Nothing compared to china, 2/3 of which still really is a third world country, and does actually have prison camps

    I find this thread curious.

I advocate for prisoners to have opportunities and self-growth, to build character. These prisoners are lucky they get to work at all, regardless how much they're paid. As I said, they aren't put in prison to work, they're put in prison to be punished and hopefully change their life. If you want to talk about work camps, I hope you don't buy anything from China.

Again, it is a privilege. In a lot of prisons, they would just sit in a cell all day being unproductive or causing trouble. If they're working, they're building job skills and experience that they can take back to the real world, they are given a task to do, they are being a productive member of our country, they are making a little money, and it's all around a good deal.

I have nothing per say against prisoners being given an opportunity to work while serving their sentence but I would prefer that it was one that provided skills for when they are released and looking for employment.

Many are incarcerated for crimes that also occur because of not having options so providing life skills and employment skills is something that should be done.

I have no problem with prisoners working within the prison or doing work that benefits the state and saves tax payers money, like picking up litter or working on roads. I am very uncomfortable with the idea of an overpriced corporate grocer or any other corporation using prisoners as slave labor in order to increase their profit margins.

They have been fined for cheating customers. No, I don't have a link. It was in our newspaper a while back--Register-Guard-Eugene.

There are a lot of people not in prison that would love to have a job... so you go to prison and you get one automatically?
When you are in prison you don't pay for rent or food. So they just get to bank their wages.
There are people not in prison with full time jobs that don't have extra money after food and rent.

    Yeah work is a privilege alright...{rolleyes}

I'd pay them nothing and just force the labor.

Kinda like the warden in Shawshank.

"These boys can learn the value of a honest days work, while providing the community with a service, and still maintain the quality of rehabilitation".

    Or something similar. :D

Well in the youtube video and some of you in this thread, you're saying like it's a good idea to pay prisoners in the first place! Keep in mind they're already being indirectly paid through tax dollar for this shitty rooms and all their meals. Still that's room and board.
After being sentenced to jail, the fact that you have any opportunity to be paid is phenomenal! it's not like that wage is going towards rent!

How the youtuber is missing these connections is beyond me

I agree and since most prisoners will eventually be released It’s an opportunity for them to learn a trade
