Personally, I think America kicks ass because we have one of the oldest constitution (In a constituational government) we haven't said "Fuck it" with (Not including the Article Of Confederation. That was just a bad idea).
Yeah, we've made some retarded choices with war, but America kicks ass anyways. In other countries we'd be fucked if we said anything against the government, had different religions, tried to protest anything at all. We are lucky as hell and I wouldn't live in any other country in the world but this one.
