As the planet heats up, the melting of the north pole is going to flood the sea with fresh water lowering the salinity and subsequently, the scientists say, shutting off the gulf stream which could plunge northern europe into an ice age. I saw a report recently that was predicting that the north pole could completely melt in the summer within 5-10 years. Kinda scary when you think about it, we could be completely fucked, and totally unprepared for this. When you think about it, if a large body of ice melts it is naturally also going to lower the temperature of the surrounding air, because it will take heat out of the air in order to raise it's own temperature, so i think that is what we are witnessing. I also saw a program about the melting of the glaciers in greenland, and it showed the difference between 20 years and now, and like FUCK LOADS of it has already melted and if they all melt completely, we can say goodbye to a lot of our coastline, and coastal cities.
looks to me like the ice cap grew substantially this year.. you didnt read rats link did you? http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/15/goddard_arctic_ice_mystery/ i actually started a thread on the coming "mini ice age".. seems there is a growing hype surrounding it.. http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=319871 i guess it has to do with "global dimming"/lack of sunspots... in theory of course,,same as "global warming"..
Guys, I don't know if there is any substance to the "hype" about this. But certainly this summer has been very disappointing and there has been a noticable decline in our summers over the past ten years. Apparently also the North pole has melted by about 40% in the past 50 years, but you can't really see the full extent of this because it is melting from underneath faster. I'm not overly concerned about it, but certainly I am considering the possibility that our climate could be reaching, or have already passed a tipping point. This is part of the natural evolution of the earths climate. The climate has been very stable for the past few hundred years, which is not unusual, but historically it is a an almost dead certainty that eventually there will be a shift in the earths climatic balance. Who or what is causing this current change, no-one will ever be able to prove, but one thing is for sure, our weather patterns are becoming more extreme and less predictable.
The climate is always changing. The earth goes through cycles, as does the sun. People talk about the climate changing like the earth has only been around for 100 years or something. This is nothing new. There have been warming and cooling periods in the past, and there will be in the future.
well its like i said the other day in another thread,,id say the chances of where i live becoming a desert or frozen tundra in my lifetime are slim to none so i aint worried about it one way or the other.. although i must say the thought of a "mini ice age"(global mean temps dropping by 3 C) is a much nicer thought than them rising by the same amount..
It's been very, very cool here to where I've had my windows open almost all summer, the leaves are falling too already, I just hope it doesn't all of a sudden skip fall and gets really cold, Fall is my favorite also, it always has a certain smell to it...
it's been pretty cool here in Jersey too.... Thank god, considering I broke my air conditioner on Friday and don't really feel like buying a new one until next summer....
Well its 86 degrees here, seems pretty normal for August. It was kind of dry and fall like here recently, but in general its been pretty normal
Great a confused clitamolagist, not knowing if we are in a good or bad period. Unsure who to blame. Just what we need. Or am I Wrong?
No, I'm not. I'm actually quite sober. Boringly so. The point is, varying ideas are put out there. Even by climatoligists. They can be wrong. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqs1YXfdtGE http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/bbcweather/forecasters/michael_fish_1987storm.shtml
the point is,, the consensus of everyone in this thread is the weather changes and we dont care.. so why are you tryin to start a debate over something that we have all already said doesnt matter?
It is as usual on the north coast of California. Cold and foggy. Everyday I wish for interesting weather.
I thought you may say that. It was lazy of me to choose that. As he worked for the BBC I thought it was appropriate. Plus, I was too lazy to find another source...no other seemed to say the same thing. Erm. you be wrong there. People do care and have had dissenting voices.
