However he did make very good arguements and did help start a revolution, sooooooo i believe he did good, but he did get a bit nutty on it
I think developing a new sort of spiritual technique that produces repeatable experiences is at some point going to be a necessity. I believe this is the very function of things like temples and spiritual rituals in shamanistic societies. A certain set of things done, in a certain manner, in a certain setting, produces the same experience in everyone. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone needs to come to follow some set of spiritual patterns to produce similiar belief. But certainly some groups are going to have to do it if there going to form a spiritual/tribalesque bond amongst one another. And certainly its going to have to happen if LSD is going to be implemented for psychotherapy. Personally I do greatly want to see LSD reintegrated into psychotherapy and a specific set of parameters developed to control a persons set/setting well enough that you could essentially program into them whatever they want. I believe it IS possible to develop society perfectly harmonized with the tao and the intent of gaia. Institutionalized doesn't necessarily mean it has to go agains the grain.
Leary is a legend. What totally sealed it for me was when I read about how he escaped from prison - Being an influential psychologist at the time, he actually wrote the questions and layout for the jail psychological tests. so he answered the questions in such a way that it seemed that he was the perect inmate, with a passion for gardening. They let him tend to the low-security prison gardens and he climbed a telephone pole, shimying along the wire into freedom He was not perfect. but he was unique and great and worthy. Whoever comes next must try to avoid the 'drop out' part of 'turn on, tune in, drop out'. I dont think people should drop out of society. Rather, we all need society in order for peaceful living, but we need a good society with willing participants and I think it is important to find your place in the world, in communities, whatever it is.
Oh wow, you're right. That makes such a big difference, and captures exactly what I now feel I have 'gotten' from LSD; turn on, tune in
Dr. Timothy Leary was true American hero in ways not well recognized by many in these late years past his demise. He inspired educated encouraged and empowered millions, he almost single handedly brought mass psychedelic consciousness into existence, he fought for the rights and freedoms of all people including the basic right to the critical thinking skills of thinking for oneself and questioning authority, not to mention using your own brain to fulfill ones potential, and he was nearly able overthrow the corrupt facist putsch of the US government with a little help from his friends. He had boundless enthusiasm for all these pursuits despite enormous personal difficulties including the suicide of his wife, the loss of his career at Harvard and prolonged illegal persecution from said corrupt government, which led to his own and many of his friends going underground and becoming persona nongrata for decades. He managed to actually escape jail and return to the light of day to continue to teach and inspire despite all this, to live as full a life as possible and see his grandchildren thrive. And while many detract from the man and his myth saying he destroyed peoples lives, destroyed psychedelic research or he sold out his own people to save himself, a little work and a critical eye to the cases reveal all to be untrue. His impact on western culture and counterculture continues unabated to this day and is in fact has grown more now than anytime since his death. The progression from psychdelics to cybernetics an their impact on culture originated with Tims work and initiatives and is credited tohim by many of his contemporaries. You may either love or hate the man but few can say he didnt have powerful impact on American culture. None of this claims he was brilliant any more than most of the time, standup philosophers usually have a 33% battling average, as he himself pointed out! As far as Im concerned, I think what appears to be his more blithe philosophical statements turn out to have more hidden depth, his deep habit of plagarism (such as with the Book of the Dead and the Tao te Ching) and recycling ideas notwithstanding. Turn On Tune In Drop Out worked perfectly fine in 1968, cause to resist the fascism of the time thats exactly what had to be done. (Tell me why every self respecting human being on Earth shouldnt take enthogens and detach from any further scocietal involvement??~ our materialist civilization we love so much is completely killing the planet!!!) His 8 circuit model seems to be the chakras indeed but he added a lot of western science to the model and expanded it for modern consumption. He was a hero in the most classic sense. Was? IS!....Leary Lives, man! https://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=287239B5430D5263
100 POSTS! Lucy did find leary. He found how to put her into a form other than rotten bread. A head ache cure I beleive he was going for. Alot of cemists did some weird stuff during those times to find good and bad drugs. I'm just glad someone found it. Hay, I have a head ache.I'd better fix it. Good post though . Have fun all!
the main difference between today and the 60's is that today the iron curtain has been torn down and we are now living in a more unified world. this has profound implications on everything including the psychedelic revolution. well what are you waiting for man? the next leary could be you, or me, or anyone. i know i will do everything i can in my life. i am still very young and have a vast amount of opportunity ahead of me. besides, it isn't like everything that was accomplished should be credited to leary alone. it should be credited to everyone. credit for the great deeds of humanity does not belong to one being alone. it belongs to all. we already are. i think what he meant by the drop out part is that one should not conform to the societal structures that already exist. obviously he didn't mean to not have communities or social structures, just that you should drop out of the corrupt one that we have now. otherwise he wouldn't have included the turn on, tune in part. or maybe he was just talking about the radio, lmao. but i doubt it. here i just found this... sorry to edit it in: 'Turn on' meant go within to activate your neural and genetic equipment. Become sensitive to the many and various levels of consciousness and the specific triggers that engage them. Drugs were one way to accomplish this end. 'Tune in' meant interact harmoniously with the world around you - externalize, materialize, express your new internal perspectives. Drop out suggested an elective, selective, graceful process of detachment from involuntary or unconscious commitments. 'Drop Out' meant self-reliance, a discovery of one's singularity, a commitment to mobility, choice, and change. Unhappily my explanations of this sequence of personal development were often misinterpreted to mean 'Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity'. seems like the drop out part makes plenty of sense, it just gets misconstrued.
True...that's what he meant but our mainstream media and government entities would have you believe otherwise.
