John or Elvis. 7 billion humans on this earth. Do you think more of them have heard of Elvis or John Lennon. Myself, I think its John.:sunny:
Out of those two, Elvis easily. Many people in Asia have no clue who John Lennon is, but mostly they know Elvis.
One of those Japanese classical musicians was on the radio yesterday saying how she enjoyed the Beatles. My guess is you are wrong.
I talk out of experience, but ofcourse I didn't speak to every single Asian and out of the people I spoke to I didn't always mention Elvis or John Lennon. But in karaoke bars I definately saw and heard Elvis more often than John Lennon. Can you imagine that?
My guess is that more have heard of Elvis than John Lennon, but more have heard of the Beatles than Elvis.
I can imagine it. Elvis is more visceral, emotional. John was cerebal. More emotional types do karaoke than cerebal. Maybe I am prejudiced when I say John, but I wonder ..... Take Africa for example. Or India. China. Anyway, I wonder also if there can be that many people who have heard of one but not the other.......
Certainly everyone in this conversation is aware of both. I once talked to a group of children in a southern mexican mountain village who did not know what spaghetti was having never seen nor eaten it.
You could well be right there. Mybe I should have framed it as Beatles vs. Elvis. But of the fabs, John is more well known than the others. The publicity over his murder ensured that I think.
I know they are all aware of both hereabouts. But in the big world out there I wonder. The mentality of a human being who had heard of John but not of Elvis would be very alien to that of most who post on these forums. So it seems to me anyway.
There is also the fact that beatles music has become such a part of pop merchandising the word imagine even being iconic.
the name "Elvis" is easier to remember than the full name "John Lennon". Elvis awareness has also been reinforced by the army of Elvis impersonators in Las Vegas, and the ensuing cycle of cultural references. I bet more people could identify a picture of Elvis than a picture of any of the Beatles, but more could identify Beatles songs.
If it were Beatles vs Elvis, I'd think slightly more people might have heard of the Beatles.. it'd still be pretty even though. The vast majority who had heard of one would have heard of the other, though. Or so I would imagine. More interestingly - and depressingly - is the claim that Rihanna has sold more albums than Guns'N'Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers for example.. And probably a lot more people have heard about Justine Bieber or whichever reality TV show "star" is popular at the minute than, say, Slash, Jerry Garcia, or Roger Waters..
Thats true enough. But the very fact that they have become so iconic (a word I really dislike BTW and hesitate to use, but it fits here] may well indicate the level of their inspiration or genius. They simply were FAB. As of course was Elvis in his time. But maybe he was more hip than fab. And the fact that you say the word "imagine" has become iconic, lends weight to my idea that maybe more people have heard of John than the Beatles or Elvis.
I think they could very well be rather equal in this. Elvis made a definite mark for his time and so did the Beatles. John Lennon in my opinion was the strongest talent in the Beatles.
