A lot of punks and Jon Lydon idolised Captain Beefheart, but he himself didn't actually like punk much.
Oh c'mon you guys, everyone knows it was Billy Joel. Whoa, just KIDDING there!! I'd have to say the Ramones...the sex pistols...ok, both.
UMMMM......no.....none of them! I think it was either the Ramones or the sex pistols but to me I don't really care who "invented" a genre. I like all types of music, some music can't even be put into a genre. Who gives a shit who "invented" a genre anyways? I know I don't.
Does no-one have any grasp of irony here? Neither the Ramones or the Sex Pistols invented punk. No-one really invented it, but even if you decide that it had some Year Zero where it became punk, it was long before the Sex Pistols or the Ramones. Look at bands like The Germs or The Damned before you start this shit.
dear god, how can so many people not realize that this is a joke? But to answer your question, I did.
Well, I'd say that if you say Jazz started punk, then you'd have to say that the romance era and before also started punk. Instead of splitting hairs that way, I'd just say that it started with 'classic' rock bands like the Kinks and the Stones. The Monks, The Stooges, New York Dolls, they were all early, but who really gave punk it's kick in the teeth, that is who really got a lot of people into the genre, was obviously the Sex Pistols. No doubt about it, man.
Sure they gave it the kick, but it was in full swing before they did. It was more of an assuring bump. The pistols didn't produce their first album until 1977. The ramones were playing in 1976, and they got labeled punk then and there.
Yeah, that argument takes hold a lot in music history classes and stuff. I had to take about 5 of them last year, but they're informative. I think the Ramones were better anyway, but many think they weren't really influential until the Bunker shows in New York, but a lot of people still argue that S.P. were the original and really the only incredibly influential punk band. That's a bit crazy, though. Walk outside your house and after about 30 minutes you'll see a Ramone's shirt, or some form of merchandise man.
punk music isnt my scene so i couldnt tell you. but what i can say is: Avir Lavigne Good Charolette Sum 41 are fake.
The Damned were also recording, and had long been performing, in 1976. I'm pretty sure the first few bands that were considered punk were playing CBGB's 1974-76, I forget the names though.
You're all wrong. It was Al Gore, during a coffee break while he was inventing the Internet...which he was originally going to call The Gorophone.
Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers was quite early too, and The Dictators. it all jsut begs the question, what is punk? 60s garage rock, any band who played at CBGB's, hardcore punk, gothic punk, oi punk, new wave? Hmmm
