Today we have still have quite a few young kids with their backpacks, hippy clothes and usually with a dog hanging out on Haight Street or Golden Gate Park. Looks very similar to what I see in the pictures of Haight in 1966 and 1967. Recently I have been spending time reading through all 12 issues of Allen Cohen's S.F. Oracle. I don't think any of the kids that are here now would understand any of it. Were the young kids in the Haight, during 1965-1967 actually that intellectual? How many deep philosophical conversations do you remember having back then in Haight-Ashbury? I don't see any of the kids there today anywhere near that smart, nor even desiring to be that smart.
That's because Haight Ashbury is now a shopping mall with dope dealers. Gutter punks putting on Tie Dyes with Pit Bulls to intimidate people and sell over priced bunk weed to tourists so the can go back to Iowa or some fucking place like that and say, "Hey I bought weed from a hippie in the Haight." Sorry I'm a little bitter. C/S, Rev J
While I wasn't in the Haight, I did attend a small college in a Mid Atlantic state from '69 to 74. In the early years there certainly was a strong intellectual current among the local "hippies" which was manifested in their readings, discussions, and life style. This was a small group proportionally that existed among the frats and sororities, jocks, straights, etc. As time went on others adopted the dress and use of chemicals, but were mainly interested in hedonistic endeavors.
