as a musician i feel no need for music idols, rather, music icons. icons of what to strive for. lennon (while i like mccartneys music he was only good in the beatles really and because of the beatles too), bowie, and then other big musicians like marley and hendrix (though in the sense of their achievement and not their music) and
john coltrane, miles davis, thelonious monk, chuck berry, jerry garcia, john cipollina, howlin wolf, muddy waters, johnny cash, beck, and syd barret...
mine would have to be..... pinkfloyed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! michael jackson jimi hendrix stevie ray vaughn kansas A.F.I. metallica dire straits
Influences and heroes, not idols... To idolize someone/thing is to place it on a pedestal above scrutiny and criticism, and no musician/artist/human is that good. Some of my favorites then as a musician: People who hit things that make noise: Bill Bruford, Christian Burchard (Embryo), Pierre Moerlen (Gong), Jack DeJohnette, Eddie Prevost (AMM), Billy Higgins, Brain, Peter Leopold (Amon Düül II), Trilok Gurtu, Chris Cutler (Henry Cow), Robert Wyatt, many more... Those who play black and white keyed contraptions (especially the ones with little knobs and sliders): Rick Wright, Terry Riley, Herbie Hancock, Hi T Moonweed (Gong), Franke/Froese/Baumann (early Tangerine Dream), Klaus Schulze, Tony Banks (Genesis) Those who don't fall into either of the above categories but I still think are cool: Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steve Reich, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Steve Hillage, Peter Gabriel, Simon Posford, J.S. Bach, Frank Zappa, George Crumb, Goro (greatest one man band in the world!) PS: Rush is most definitely NOT a jamband.
Don Cherry and Steve Howe. I think Don Cherry felt and understood music better than anyone ever has or will.
no longer under the influence of stupidity: Noel Gallagher, Brian Jones, Syd Barrett, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Iggy Pop, Frank Zappa, George Harrison, Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, Shannon Hoon, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Arthur Lee, Michael Franti, Nico, hmm that could be it.
Guitar - Tony Iommi, Slash, Robby Krieger, Dave Gilmour, Jimmy Page Vocals - Ville Vallo, Jim Morrison, Buck Dharma APOCALYPTICA: Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, Perttu Kivilaakso (Cello metal is god!)
For singers: Janis, Robert Plant, Jim Morrison, Dave Matthews, Eddie Vedder For guitar players: Carlos Santana, Trey, Eric Clapton, For Bands, Allaman Bros, Dave Matthews Band, Santana, Greatful Dead, Pink Floyd, Led Zep. Style: Dylan, Prince, Talking Heads All have inspired me to do different things in music, but i have to really thank Dave Matthews for giving me a creative start.
