My idol is definetely Janis Joplin. She was awsome what a voice, and had an amazing amount of energy. Come to think of it oddly enough I had a dream that I hung out with her last night, and that she was a friend of the family... I'm dead serious, wow what a weird dream that was... I also idolize John Bonham I am a drummer, and i recently bought a DVD of Zeppelin he was insane on the drums...What talent I wish to be half as good a drummer as him, in my eyes he is God lol.
Now yer talkin! I paid about $5 to see Zep on Sept. 1st of '71 at the Hollywood Sportatorium in south Fl. They just hit the States and were on tour promoting their 4th album. No opening act (I don't believe they ever had openers. Their manager Peter Grant - being a shrewd businessman - wanted Zep to keep as much of the gate profit as possible) and they played for approx. 3 to 3-1/2 hours, non-stop.The arena held 10,000 ppl, but only 7,000 showed up! Can you believe it - they could'nt even sellout a 10,000 seat show at that time? But....then "Stairway" hit the charts, and the next time they blew into town, you were lucky to get tix to one of their sold-out 20,000+ stadium shows. Was one helluva concert.....yeah, man.
I started playing drums in '69 as a small child. I think Micky Dolenz of the Monkees was my first musical hero, then onto Ringo Starr and Nigel Olsson who was the drummer for Elton John. John Bonham was probably my biggest hero for Drumming and the guy who I stole the most from (or tried too!)... Come to think of it I swiped a bit from Ginger Baker too! In the mid 70's Johnny Winter inspired me to pick up a guitar. It would be hard not to mention Jimi, and Page as role models.. I think the two players who have had the most impact on me were Joe Walsh and Tommy Bolin. Both guys had a million licks up their sleeve, but never fired them all at once. Also very versitile. Lately I've been rediscovering the old blues guys like Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. That never gets old. Also the Jazzers like Miles and Coltrane. Stuff they recorded in the 40's and 50's still sounds relavent today.
i play keyboards... these are my keyboardy heroes... John Lord (deep purple) Chick Churchill (ten years after) Ken hensley (uriah heep) Alan Price (animals) Ray Manzerek (doors) Keith Emerson (ELP) Theolonious Monk (Jazz piano player) McCoy Turner (Coltrane Quartet) Mike Rateldge (Soft Machine) Rick Wakeman (Yes) Jimmy Destrey (Blondie) Rick Wright (pink floyd) theres more but im bored now...
You tape that show by any chance, or know anyone that did?!? I have the show from Orlando on August 31st but I don't think the show you mentioned is even in known circulation in Zeppelin circles! I'm a Zeppelin nut btw with 250+ shows, which is the reason I ask such things Onto said question.. Jimmy Page Eric Clapton Peter Green Stevie Ray Vaughan B.B. King Freddie King Roy Buchanan Brian May Paul Kossoff Paul Rodgers Rory Gallagher Eddie Hazel I'm sure I've missed lots.. but that's off the top of me head at present.. :H
I always forget the beatles... hmm.., but I really do think I like folksy stuff the most... kottke and gordon, bruce cockburn and such.
I'll answer this in terms of artists that have directly inspired the music I'm doing myself; so: The Beatles, Guided by Voices, David Bowie, The Who, Nine Inch Nails, Amon Tobin, Portishead, Soul Coughing (Ruby Vroom, at least), Peter Gabriel, Koop, Massive Attack, and Drum and Bass in general, since I've been experimenting with it on some songs... probably have to choose Paradox, since he's edits his beats like a madman.
Some of the greatest would have to be Jim Morrison Ray Manzarek Bob Marley Jerry Garcia Jimi Hendrix Jimmy Page (wow so many good musicicans named jim:H ) and the drummer from Rush, i cant come up with his name
In any order you choose to make it.... Grateful Dead John Two-Hawks Michael Johnathon Lorenna McKennitt John Denver The Doors
Brad, he just exemplified the easy goin attitude that I like to cultivate. Bob, Bob was a riteous man, and he could sing. Frank was possibly the most underrated guitarist and composer ever. Les...ye fucking gods. Les Claypool's a walking god.
My idols....: John Lennon for his guitar and overall musician skills... he didn't start playing guitar til he was 17, oh yeah :H Jimi Hendrix is the reason I picked up a guitar Jimmy Page because I consider him the 2nd or 3rd greatest guitarist ever Robert Plant for his vocals and overall stage mojo Shannon Hoon for his vocals and overall stage mojo
