I want to go to see Stone Henge. I heard that its not really that original that some of the stones where placed there by cranes. That it was "restored" in the early part of the 20th century.
tis indeed news to me, that anyone with access to modern communications, has ever not heard of the ancient stone circles scattered about the british isles. glastonburry being as much archtypal but stonehenge being of course the best and most widely known. we don't really know WHO errected them, other then that they've been there a good long time, possibly even before the druids. undoubtedly they marked celibratory gathering places. just as certainly they were works of tremendous civil enegineering for their day, whatever that day might have been. that they were errected before modern machinery and the common use of mechanical energy has led to much speculation, some of it pretty far out there. however it was done, there is a bit of magic to such places, and to it's having been. and perhaps the places these stone circles were errected were already sacred even before they were, as seems quite likely. =^^= .../\...
thats a bit mean don't you think? Plus its his mum, he's not going to stone her over a matter of trivia.
I'm American and I had heard of Stonehenge even when I was very young and even before I was pagan. Maybe it might be a nice idea to get your mother a book for her birthday or next gift-giving holiday.
jeez. in history we studied all the megalithic henges in europe, being so widespread and all, they're kinda hard to ignore...i didn't exactly go to a prestigious school, either.
oh, and a pretty common theory among people who theorize on such things is that the henge structures PREdate the druidic practices.
