In a what if scenario, you are asked a question you may have heard before..
If you could live in anytime in the past, when would it be?
But before answering so quickly, I'm asking you to take it a step further. What's the one invention that you'd need in your existence?

Anything is an invention, from clothes, to using utensils, or even the internet. My answer would be the toilet, I was just thinking about as much as I adore a lot of ancient history, I just don't think I'd want to live before the toilet was invented. If you've ever experienced a chinese "squat-a-potty" (a hole in the ground) that may change your opinion of the past too :p

    So what's yours?

Coffee would be high on the list.

But really I wouldn't want to go back much further than windows XP.

I am pretty dependant on electricity and heat, though.....

Guess, there are plenty of dead trees here to make a fire.....but first need to build a fireplace.

There’s no modern convenience I couldn’t do without, but my meat would have to be cooked and since the first controlled use
of fire was around 500,000 years ago, I’d say just about that time.

Just because you weren't there when they were invented doesn't mean it didn't happen...

Somebody had to piss on all that lava to cool it down. Made a really neat hissing sound too... We later let cats use that sound. (maybe I've said too much)

I guess we could reduce it to electricity but I'll say specifically electric guitar.

    Is skim milk an invention?

Without it, I would weigh around 500 lbs / 227kg.

I thought technology first, when it comes to that, most awesome-est invention ever at the time was Playstation 1, not much of a gamer now, but never have been wrapped up in any piece of tech like I was when the PS1 came out

    Then I saw this:

Coffee is the one thing I've never been able to do without, well two things but lets keep this family friendly ( The other thing also starts with 'C' ;) )

well there probably isn't a THING that i couldn't live happily without, in a cultural context where other channels of gratification were more common.
there are a lot of technologies that exist that i like. but i also lived before some of them existed, or became common.
and some (the interurban and the narrow gauge, in the part of the world where i live) that were already mostly gone even when i was born.
in my life it has been trains and computers and the nuts and bolts of technology that has made each of them possible.
agriculture and electricity have both played and essential, if mostly 'transparent' role as well.

as long as there is air to breathe, and water fit to drink, food to eat and shelter, these are the basics, as far back or forward you care to go.

public transportation is the real wealth of nations for everyday people, and environment is the foundation everything else depends on.

i don't have these kinds of attachments beyond that. i love having my own computers and access to the net. which, incidentally, i don't think corporate media, or even business, belongs on here at all.

i think agriculture is probably the most important "invention" in human history, and after the science, and technologies derived from science. engineering, architecture and all of that.

but i don't mention them as playing a prominent visible role in my life, because like most people, they're so everyday life we don't even notice them.
i'm sure we'd notice them if they were gone though. most of the more then 90% of population, who live in cities, would probable die in less then a year without them.

again, without a generous environment, no amount of intelligence would be able to prevent the dying of the overwhelming majority of humanity.
