No, there is definitely a strong etymological link between heathen and hearth. The modern meaning of the word does NOT include this, and it is now a pejorative. It originally referred to people dwelling on the countryside who were not christian - hence the connection to hearth and home. Now that word is devoid of that original meaning it is just used as a rude word to non-christians. I for one would like to reclaim it and erase the stigma associated with it.
I think it has essentially always been a rude word to non-christians and it should have no use for non-christians other than in the historical sense.
I think you're probably right, 'Heathen' was most likely a derogatory term coined by Christians to begin with... ZW :ssmokeit:
That doesn't mean we're gonna let them win...... Anyway, it really doesn't matter. There are much better descriptors anyhow, Asatru, Forn Sidr, Norse Polytheism etc.
Haha no sir..:2thumbsup: I think these days 'Atheist' pisses off righteous Christians more than 'Heathen'
This morning and today I have paid particular homage to the Spirits of Traveling and New Places. Tonight I will be honoring the Spirits of Hearth and Home. (Home is wherever I park my back pack and walking staff).
