If you've seen any Michael Moore film, you know what to expect from him, and you certainly won't be disappointed by this one. Actually, it may be a little funnier than average for him. He's trying to raise his entertainment value without compromising the message, or the integrity of the film as a serious work. It was nothing like the title led me to expect. None of the countries visited were anywhere that the US would ever invade. He traveled mostly around Europe, asking people questions and letting them tell their own stories. As always, he found fascinating people with interesting things to say. I almost wish that all hyper-conservative Americans who are completey ignorant of Europe could be forced to see this movie. But no, I know what would happen. They would get angry. They would say it was all fake. Staged propaganda from paid actors reading scripts. Because every good right winger knows that Europe is a hell hole full of miserable, envious people who would rather be here. I'd love to say something about the ending, with its insightful connection to the Wizard of Oz, but you need to see it in context. It's a brilliant point. The main thing on my mind as I walked out of the theater is just how utterly and profoundly lacking in compassion the US seems to be, by European standards, in spite of the fact (or maybe because of the fact?) that a much smaller percentage of Europeans go to church.
It would be interesting to hear how well it matches up with your own experiences and background knowledge of Europe in general.
Yeps, although I am not an expert on every country in Europe of course (generally the further south and east the more superficial my knowledge and thus insight on the people there gets). But I am interested to see if I even agree with a lot of the people in that doc, and if their mindsets suprise me or are as expected!
I would expect Europeans to see this film and want to ask Moore something like, "Are you telling us that Americans need to have these things explained to them?" Yes, they do. As a member of an international forum, you already know a good bit about the ignorance level here, and some of the incorrect assumptions. Isolation can be a wonderful thing and a terrible thing, depending on the situation. Our two best friends and our two worst enemies are the Atlantic and Pacific.
I'm not a big fan of Michael Moore, but I thought this documentary was one of his better ones and he made a lot of good points in it.
