I'm with Hilder on this. I would want to hold on to my dogs paw as they left.

I've never done it before. I imagine it's pretty intense. But I wouldn't want 'em to be there alone.

I waited in the next room. My dad was in the room with him.

I went in and said I loved him and goodbye right after. then I left.

It only happened a month ago.....

Man, this thread made me really sad reading it. I don't know what I am going to do when my dog dies. Hes always been there for me and is such a pure soul. He has gone with me from city to city, been there through some rough times. Such a good friend. I'm going to go hug him now.

I want to take him out into the woods when he's going to die, but then I wouldnt have the drugs the vet use. And there's no way I'm shooting him. But I am not real fond of it being in a clinical setting on some metal table either. So I guess that needs to be figured out.

Best wishes to you and your dog man. I'm sure that is really hard.

Oh god, Hilder, I am SO sorry. That dog is so precious. :( We've had to put down two of our dogs, but I couldn't go in. I can't watch an animal die, it breaks my heart.

I had a German Shepherd since I was almost two years old right up until I was eleven years old. I didn’t have any friends back then and it may sound silly to some people but he was like an older brother to me, we looked out for each other. When he started to get arthritis in his spine and his back legs started to go we had just moved to a new state and town, it was mum and dad that decided to have him put to sleep.

I went in with them, gave him a hug and watched them take his collar and put him to sleep. Looking back on it I probably shouldn’t have gone in there so young and it wasn’t nice. But my excuse for going in was that he would have wanted that.

Nearly eight years on, it still brings tears to my eyes.

this thread makes me sad. when I was 15, my mother had my two year old cat put down because he was kind of crazy and attacked my two year old sister. they killed him while I was out of town, and when I came back they told me nothing until I figured out what'd happened on my own.

the cat I have now is one of the sweetest I've ever had, he's full of love and very cuddly, and too lazy to be shy and hide around new people. have to find a new home for him now or find someone to take care of him for a month since my family is going away and they've been taking care of him. if I had to put him down, I would be very sad indeed. I love animals, unfortunately, my mother hates them.
