Yeah actually that is the "real world" I was referring to. I haven't had cable tv in about 5 years, so that is about when I watched it last, it was already on it's way to not being as good then, can't imagine what it's like now.

Most reality shows disgust me because it's about people trying to exert tbeir authority over others. I guess this makes the contestants feel better about themselves. Why can't people in this country rely on their own ability to feel good about themselves instead of having to put others down to feel good. No wonder we're always at war. Lets find a country that don't do things are way and bomb the hell out of them and then let others know how wonderful we are for doing it.
I've seen this on BBC America and it is horrible. A chef in charge of a kitchen acts like a jack ass towards his employees by yelling at them and throwing things around the kitchen. This chef is far worse than Simon.

Usually the United States takes great British programs and turns them from gold into crap. This time we are going to take a piece of crap and turn it into more crap.

I was in a bad mood yesterday and was venting. I have nothing against being competive, but reality show contestants seem more concerned with getting their face on tv and showing off than winning. If thats what they think being competive is than they are pretty dumb.

ultimatly 'showing off' is the main point... you have to give them a little break though...i am defending the bloody idiots i think hahaha, though your sweeping everyone one of them into one category, you may have a point, i just think they are not all terrible people..some just want a bit of fun.

Yes, reality shows got old fast.... Has anyone seen POPULARITY CONTEST on CMT? My brother and my uncle are on that show... it just shows them briefly in the background doing stage work and stuff, though.

Why not have a reality show that shows America bossing all the other countries around. And another reality show about all the protest gatherings in the U.S. against Bush . That would be way more interesting than watching a bitchy chef boss people around. :)

I actually enjoyed CSPAN's full length uncut coverage of the Sunday protest in NY against Bush during the week of his convention. It was better than watching the floats on the Thanksgiving Day parade. A couple hundred thousand people with signs and floats. And the dragon float caught fire right in front of McDonalds. What a coincidence!

All through the parade for 3 hours there was a crowd of people near the CSPAN microphone chanting "Fox News sucks!" (funny how Fox carried none of it, except when the dragon caught fire. Those horrible protestors!)

The ending was great too. Some young guy was the last one on the street when the police were clearing people out and yelled in front of the camera, "And George Bush can kiss my ass!"

And what's up with the bitchy boss thing? There's some chopper show in the U.S. with a boss who bitches everyone around, just like the bitchy chef show in Britain. Boy. That's just what all of us need to see after working all day and being bossed around at work.

Anyone remember Real People? It was a more light-hearted reality show around 1980. They used to go around the country and visit communities that had interesting events. There was a place in Colorado that had these large robot monster fights. This was about 20 years before that craze became popular on cable channels. Candid camera was a great reality show too. Those kinds of shows took planning and money. If you go way back to the 50s, there was People Are Funny, another show similar to Candid Camera.

Today's shows just put a camera in front of the sofa and film whatever happens. And usually nothing does. :)

Check out this quote from the MSNBC author:

"Sound familiar? Even today, some critics deride reality television as the genre that shall not be named. And bashing reality TV has become the new whipping child for people desperate to prove their alleged intelligence and superiority."

I thought the people on the reality shows were the ones desperate to prove their alleged superiority. :) There's some real screwballs at MSNBC.

The original formats are ok..when they get 'translated' wholesale by edemol or RDF media for big bucks..the get diluted beyond belief imho.

How about a reality show where the normal people yell at the boss? Now that would be creative!

Or, how about a sitcom where a sassy little white boy lives with black parents? Now that would really be 'Different Strokes'! :)

These reality show producers lack so much creativity it's pathetic. I saw one where they had a bunch of women try to date a guy who claimed to be rich but was really poor. All the women who turned him down were happy, except the woman who ended up marrying him was all pissed off at the end when she found out he was poor.

It would have been really creative if the guy was rich and appeared poor. Then all the women who had turned him down would have been all pissed off! But they're not creative enough to think up something like that.

What's that other show in Britain? I think it's called Green Wing. The ad shows women wiggling their boobs, walking down the hall with their bare ass hanging out, etc. What a great show! Forget being creative and doing work to make a show. Just appeal to the publics most primal and basal instincts, like boobs and yelling at people. :) I haven't really watched much of that show, but maybe they'll get really creative and add a bitchy boss who yells at all the women. :)
