When voting in an election how do you go about it?

  1. Pick candidate on personality

  2. Pick policies of the party

Results are only viewable after voting.

Pick a candidate on ideology. Party doesn't matter to me. Sure, I am more likely to find someone I agree with more in some parties but there is no guarantee and we shouldn't think that just because someone is of a certain party that they are automatically the best choice. Also note that I don't buy into the "lesser of two evils" idea.

I don't know how many of you are from the United States, but in this country we've never had disciplined political parties anything comparable to parliamentary systems. I vote for candidates who have basic integrity, moral values and patriotism, and respect for the institutions of our democracy. That would be someone the opposite of Trump. And I vote for whatever party seems to be most supportive of principles like the rule of law, strong institutions, liberty, the constitution and protection of American interests abroad, and a modicum of social justice. At present, the Republican Party seems dedicated to greed, cult of personality, and Nativism. But there are things about Democrats, particularly the progressive wing thereof, that I find off-putting: especially the ideological purism. So in that respect, I tend to be a lesser of evils voter--especially when the Republican Party and its candidate seems so much more evil at the present time.

Both. Any politician can claim particular policies as their own but it doesnt mean they'll follow through with anything once elected. I also want a candidate who has the character and integrity to fight for what they believe. And a sense of humor always helps.

I hate partisan politics. When people vote for candidate based only on their party affiliation, all it says is that they aren't paying any attention at all. Just take a LITTLE bit of time at the very least to look up the background of your candidate and what they stand for. This is the reason why we have idiots and crooks in both parties.

That being said, I know I will become a loyal Democrat voter once I die. Because dead people tend to vote Democrat in mass numbers for some strange reason

Not really. I’ve never voted straight for one party on my ballot. When I don’t like either of the major party candidates, I’ll vote libertarian, or fill in the write-in blank. One time I voted green party. I never voted for my current congressman because he’s a swamp republican. Trump was the first republican nominee that I ever voted for, and I still don’t regret it. I would consider voting democrat too if they actually ran someone who prioritized the citizen over the government.

So you'll be voting for Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary then? ;)

Say what you will about the Bern but there's no denying his number one priority is the average american citizen

Wow! You think Trump prioritizes the citizen? Trump prioritizes himself over everything else, and more than any other president, presents the danger of scrapping the rule of law and establishing autocracy as our Dear Leader.

Oh, you mean that particular citizen. In that case, is Six saying he voted for Trump cuz Trump's the only citizen who counts?

How do I select a party when voting in an election? That's the question put to us here in this thread.

I've never given party affiliation much consideration, other than to keep all elected officials at one level of government from being of the same party. One-party cities, states, or national governments don't function very well. Dissent is healthy. Deals made in back rooms are generally worse for the public than deals made out in the open.

About the only time I've considered party was when I've been prepared to vote for individuals who all happened to be from one party, and it looked as though that's how the election was going to turn out overall, say with all state-wide elected officials being of a single party. I have occasionally voted for at least one candidate for at least one office of another party when I had no strong preference, just to mix things up and to encourage some dissent.

As far as two-party politics, I'm only a little more favorably disposed to that than I am to one-party politics. I have more than one citizenship and I vote in more than one country's elections. I prefer parliamentary systems and multiple-party coalitions to what exists in the US today. In the US, I've more often voted for independents and third-party candidates in presidential elections than for the candidates of the two major parties. The major party candidates usually seem to have glaring odious flaws in their personal and professional histories by the time they run for that office.

You mean the world’s oldest teenage communist that never grew up?

His priority is the government, not the citizen. People like him don’t trust the marketplace and individuals to make any decisions for themselves and the betterment of society. His one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare and his demand for price controls means he thinks the governing class are a bunch of trusted know-it-all’s who know better than the individual or the consumer. He could’ve flown to Canada or Cuba to get his heart stints to demonstrate superior the healthcare system of those countries; I wonder why he didn’t. LOL

He honeymooned in the tyrannical Soviet Union, endorsed Hugo Chavez, and says breadlines are “A good thing.” He also says that no white person knows what it’s like to be poor. Has he walked a mile in every white person’s shoes? Of course not. He just sees people as collective groups, not as unique individuals. I’d argue that this is a very racist thing to say. After all, racism is just another form of collectivism.

    Accountability is IMO Key.
Party Manifestos are often never a truth, and when it comes down to it, for me,- it is actions of an individual that show their Conviction
