Through the call of my ancestors, crying out from the past seeking justice Seriously though this issue brings out the worst on both sides. but until issues like this are addressed and either accepted as the root cause of preterm births among african american women, or simply dismissed as folly, we will never move forward Hotwater
I'm white and I was beaten up by a couple cops, while one of the cops threatened to rape me. Seriously. But yeah... they were women haters. Kicked one of them in the balls while I was being hit- asshole tried to charge me but it didn't hold up... so the cop started stalking me... driving around my house and harrassing me for little to no reason (which he even told me).
Anyways... I agree with a lot of what Praxis (including the difference between prejudice and racism by the system) and Honeyhannah said... And, of course racism exists- of course black people in general have the odds stacked against them more then your average white person. But of course racism can go both ways and waaayyy beyond black and white... and sexism and ageism and many other ism's exist... The trouble is though in assuming that (and i'm only talking black and white here because that is largely what this thread is about) a PARTICULAR black person and a particular white person have had certain experiences. There are plenty of black people who have NOT been beat up by the cops, discriminated against by an employer, been homeless, been poor, etc.... while there are individual white people who have had some of those, or even all of those, experiences.
Believe me I understand there are many forms of racism and sexism, but I’d like to keep this thread on point before it morphs into something beyond the limits of the initial discussion Hotwater
........................................................................................................ Interesting point! There are not a lot of African immigrants in NJ. Some Nigerians. There are a lot more Black immigrants from The Islands, Dominican Republic. Haiti, Jamaica. New City ( Rockland) has a big Haitian community. Seems that The Haitians have it the toughest. They are looked down upon by the other groups in the discussion and have the language barrier. Some seem like innocent country-type people. Would immigrants from Africa constitute too small a sample for this study? What about infant mortality of Caribbian immigrants?
very nicely said hannah. and THANK YOU SO MUCH. it's like i finally heard the words to a song after trying to remember it for 20 years. how about daily upkeep? if they're not getting their hair wet, how do they keep it clean? they're not getting nasty and stinky, so obviously they're doing something.
My knowledge is limited to the one hour PBS special, but PBS.org almost certainly has additional information on their website Hotwater
Before everyone starts taking sides, The data presented made a very good case for white racism as the chief cause for a higher than average infant mortality rate among african americans. This information is not etched in stone, and like most new discovery should be open for interpretation and scientific scrutiny. For those of you who are taking this personally you shouldn’t. It doesn’t mean you’re a racist, far from it, it only means you live in a society where racism is so engrained into the very fabric of its subset, that you often don’t recognize it when its right before your eyes. Hotwater
^ It didn't prove anything other than the fact that infant mortality among blacks is higher. To assume it must be because of racism is quite simply ludicrous. Many blacks also have sickle cell anemia. Is that because of the white man, too?
i know, hotwater. you know how i get. i take everything personally. but i do believe it's a lot more complicated than white racism.
I am a white businessman. None of my employees in Central America are white. They are all Black or Latino. I will never hire a white man to work for me down there. Am I racist against the white man? Or is this a case of whitey sticking it to whitey?
How exactly does white racism (and not racism from other groups or different kind of racism) relate to african american infant mortality?
