Rock will always be ready to spring back to life. People will always enjoy hearing simple, heartfelt music with a strong back beat. It's not gone forever.
That may very well be true. To find great new acts now, you have to go searching. I thought grunge was a phase too, but as soon as grunge came out... well, suddenly rock and roll took itself FAR too seriously and nihilistically for its own good. If you look up the soundtrack for the movie "Valley Girl" on Amazon, for example (which was a collection of various rock songs popular during the day), it's described as a gem from the last decade (the 80s)when rock and roll, as well as rock and roll youthful rebellion, was genuinely flat out fun -- and "fondly recalls an era when rock's fun quotient hadn't yet been tattooed and pierced into oblivion". There are still a lot of great and fun new acts coming out, though. I loved The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana were pretty good once I waited long enough that I could avoid the hype around them, and I'm also very fond of Air.
Yeah I'll go with this date/year when rock 'n' roll died but as much to do as with Lennon's death as with Bonzo's.
Rock and Roll was born in 1969 and died in September of 1980 on the day that John Henry Bonham took the stairway up to heaven !!!
It still lives today! However, the GOOD bands died between 1989-1993...thats whenever the hairbands were still kickin'. There's good rock today, but NOTHING like the "classic", older stuff!
Yes there is. It's just not as popular and hot like it was in the sixties. I gave some examples already, but here are another few who have a myspace page, so you can see (and listen) right away that it's still around : http://www.myspace.com/deadmansweden http://www.myspace.com/orangesunshinerocks http://www.myspace.com/sienaroot http://www.myspace.com/smokeinsunshine
I think Stadium Arcadium by the Chili Peppers rocked, and that came up just over a year ago. It's not dead. It's not going to die. Some new stuff might suck, but there's always a diamond in the rough.
i think the last great band was oasis and when liam flipped out rock died no band has put out consistant music since, disco turned into techno then rap now forever we will be surronded by gangsta white guys and gangsta black guys sayin the same rhymes over the same shitty technology noise forever none of the new kids today appreciate talent all they want is subs and someone yelling something gangsta. accully rock went into a coma in 1970 when the greats died then they officiially pulled the plug in 1980 when john died and rap came out
Can't believe you came to this conclusion. Did you even checked this whole thread out, which already has plenty of examples of rock that are just as great as the old ones. I bet you didn't. Don't live in the past, man. Listen to the music, don't pay that much attention to the date and you might suprise yourself.
I can't find it now but someone said music wasn't censored till hair metal... but music was censored in the 70s just take a song like Lucy in the Sky or Miss You. There is so much love in this thread for Led Zeppelin as being rock pioneers, and while I love me some Zeppelin lets not forget all they were doing was "ripping off" old blues muscians and recycling old blues songs. Doesn't make them less as muscians or artists, but all that style, and the majority of those lyrics came from blues music from the 30s. As for the hair metal scene, all those crazy riffs and solos are directly from classical music like brahms, devorjak, and the like. Elvis' signature moves and sound were ripped straight from "down home" music festivals in the south. Bands would play at carnivals and fairs and everyone in the town would come out and dance and move around. What makes rock and roll is the mix of so many different influences. Rock and roll was and always will be born out of blues and jazz, rock and roll has not died but has grabbed a lot more influence from pop and whatnot and dropped it's original blues ties which is why we have our present state of affairs. Let alone the fact that I haven't seen one person in here give credit to the blues for birthing rock and roll, its no wonder the music is evolving in a bad way. There are plenty of great rock bands still around, they probably don't play on fucking MIX 98 or whatever the fuck radio is popular now adays. Try your local bar or club; rock lives where it has always lived. In the fingers of everyone who plays it and still remembers where it came from.
We cant say rock and roll is dead. Say things like this just shows we are closing our eyes (or ears) for the reality. We can find good examples of rock if we try to find it,at least i can. Of course classic bands like led zeppelin, beatles, doors seems to have a different energy but this energy was part of the 60's,many changes were happening this time. Maybe if this bands were playing today, they wouldnt receive the same attention,i dont know. I love this old bands, and if they werent so great they wouldnt influence many singers until today. But come on,we cant pretend rock died, because it didnt. Its still alive until everybody stops playing and listening it,the old and the "new". We cant talk about rock like it was an animal,or a monument that died or was destroyed in a specific date. We cant even say when the medieval period has finished,it was just turning less strong and then everybody noticed things werent like they were before, but we still can see influences of this period in the present. I'm not comparing rock and roll with it,i'm just trying to show that even the question "When" was not right, because we couldnt say a death date of rock, that is a music style. Anyway, everybody has a different idea about rock and roll, maybe what is rock for me its not for you, etc. But in my opinion, before come and say rock is dead, the person should try to listen some good new stuff, searching for it,or asking for friends,i dont know. And, if after this you still think you dont like the songs, its ok, everybody has your own opinion about music. But the person cant say things before try different visions.
