When exactly did rock n' roll die?

My eyes.. my faith... all being destroyed by these blasphemous comments.

Have we forgot the noble words of Brian Johnson?

I also couldn't help but notice how many young people in particular discredit the 80's for being some of the best years in rock. Have we forgot all things fucking awesome?!

    Ac/Dc were great
Van Halen were great (in all line ups)
    Motley Crue
    Guns N Roses
    Skid Row
    Alice Cooper
    Rush
    Iron Maiden
    Judas Priest
    Ozzy
Plus, you're looking at the golden years of Heavy Metal, a form of Rock.

Through the 90's, the face of rock did change a fair bit... however it lived on. Bands such as The White Stripes came around, even the grunge bands of the early 90s was a strong showing for rock, even though many of you would rather look at that with a traditionalist view (one in which rock was formed to rebel against, lest we forget).

    Some great 90s bands..
    Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Nirvana
    Pearl Jam
    Tool
    Alice in Chains
    Our Lady Peace
    Primus
    amongst many others...

Ah, yet another decade, and with this one comes even more rock artists who are being ignored by rock and roll traditionalists. Big rock artists for this decade thus far include, but are not limited to..

    Wolfmother
    The White Stripes
    Tool
and most of the 90's bands carrying on doing what they do best.

If anything is dying, it is good Metal...

Also, my listening preference is found rooted deep within the confines of thrash and power metal, I am not what I would consider overly knowledgable in the standard rock & roll genre, although if I can come up with those bands just through general knowledge, I'm sure others could point out other bands that have come and gone over the past 3 decades who released things worth hearing.

I believe that it isn't the music that has died, but the support of commercial businesses. Radio stations could easily change their pop rap programs to rock and metal and the mainstream sheep would follow. I see it as only a matter of time before this "urban" radio craze dies down and real music comes back. Hopefully good metal will make a return as well.

While I did point out "rock and roll traditionalists", I am pretty much a metal traditionalist.. I haven't been very impressed with new (nu) metal bands... But, I do see that metal is living on..

The Electric Guitar was invented around 1955.

This new instrument kicked off Rock music in the same way that the invention of the Saxaphone in 1920 +- kicked off the Jazz Age.

Personal feelings are that the Electric Guitar has said just about all that it has to say. We can keep on enjoying oldies and recycled riffs.

Its almost like the art world where painters are not competing with the old masters of the canvas, yet we can enjoy abstract paintings.

Perhaps some new musical invention will come around to inspire our composers.

Have got to think that synthisers and mtv had a mixed impact on Rock.

would agree with LaylaSkye that rock colapsed with that wall.

However I can agree that some kinds of metal has a rock 'n roll atmosphere to it and it surely evolved from rock 'n roll, I can understand that a lot of people separate rock from metal.

Rock 'n roll isn't dead at all, it looks like those people who love it but claim it to be dead just don't want to search for it or they consider it dead as long as it isn't played much on the radio.
There are still a lot of new rock 'n roll bands playing and recording albums. I gave a few examples in this topic (and I don't mean tributebands or bands like the Darkness or Wolfmother):

    http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169754&page=3

And the death of a genre can't be stopped by the death of an icon or person, or new genre, or cutting of hair by an icon if there's still tours and great rock 'n roll albums are being released. What a fucking nonsense, just like that stuff about 'if it's in our hearts, it's alive', if it's not around anymore it would be dead, but that's just not the case. Seems you peeps are too lazy to look or something.

Not my personal feelings, fortunately. There's still original rock being made and I enjoy some excellent guitarsolo's from songs released this year. And it doesn't sound recycled to me at all, yet it sounds like rock how we want to hear it. Not modern or fitting in new subgenres like alternative rock or indie or whatever, real rock.

The electric guitar was actually invented in the 1930s. See Rickenbacker's tungsten pickup hollowbodies, or the russian "electromagnetic" guitar.

The guitar can never run out of expressions, don't kid yourself.

I don't think that any man can tap into the full capabilities of the electric guitar.....Some have came close like hendrix, paige, etc. but there are too many combinations of notes, scales and chords to ever run out of fresh material. I only wish that there were more artists today with enough passion, talent and energy to push the instruments limits. I am now going to watch my Zeppelin DVD and cry along with paige. PEACE

I wouldn't say that. They were great guitarists and "musicans", but they didn't come close to put the guitar to it's full capabilities.

John Petrucci is probably the one who has, on the other hand.

Yeah. I believe it was pre 90's really. When people started bands with thugs and beat machines.

I believe the real question is when did it stop being light hearted and fun. I love Tool and Alice and Chains just as much (if not more) but as far as metal goes its great to rock out to but the sense of fun and happiness is lost in rock. You know its sad but true. (Yes, Im a Metallica geek).

Rock n' Roll is dead off AIDS.

You guys really should be looking to the future, not at the past. Music WILL go further.

Very true. Alot of rock isn't just for shits and giggles. I didn't take that into consideration. If it means something, if it has a deep soulful message than right on with it. Im just wondering where all the happy rock went. Like I said, I love Metallica and Tool and all those. I freakin love them. Rock is NOT dead for me! Thats silly. Theres nothing I love more than rock music and music in general. It will only be dead when people stop having things to write about and things to die for. At least my personal opinion. I just think we're in a kind of rock and roll duldrum right now. We're slowly coming out of it but rap is dominating the charts right now. We just need to keep listening and it will never die. Like they said "Teach your children well" with rock and roll. So, chill out guys. Its all good. I love rock just as much as anyone else.

ridiculous... i know i m pretentious to tell you that ...

but well it s more or less ok for his date of birth...i will say 53 or 54
But for his dead...no When cobain his dead the rock n roll was already dead ...

Rock n roll is dead more than 10 years before Kurt Cobains dead...

But you can find so many different date

    1953-1973

    1965-1975

    and many others

    BUT I GO FOR 1953-1983

1983 reprezent the year where all major rock and hard rock 70s band were recording shit records...commercial records... the year where MTV (rock) boys band took the Power...and the rest of rock popular bands were sold to the system...writing more simple lyrics and recorded songs & album with an horrible production and synthetic new drums... horrible... this is the death of rock n roll...hippie were gone...punk and Original hard rock dissapear in smoke...it s time for 100 percent commercial rock n roll

the MTv years started and your hair & clothes style became AS or more important than the music...a big part came from the fresh new reign of music videos... perfect for a new reign of the ego

Wrong. haha. Pretty straight forward answer to a misguided statement.

If you really feel that all music after 83' was mtv produced, you've been missing out on A LOT of music. We've had this discussion before and my thoughts on the matter still stand.

Oh, and "an original name", if the aids hasn't taken you yet, do tell, how is r&r dead off aids?

Hair and clothing style were also significant before the MTV years. KasabianRulesMan, (what's your real name? Your nick is just too long..) Tell me what you think of this band for example, does it sound more commercial than 70's rock? ---> www.myspace.com/shovelheadnj
