It's how free the people are that is important, and after all democracy is nothing more than mob rule. The country was not founded to create a society of equals or to create a central government that could produce laws in a true democratic way. It was recognized that there is NO good form of government, while recognizing the fact that some form of government is a necessity.
The right to vote with ones feet has long been removed by the gradual diminishing of sovereignty of the states. That right only continues to exist in some of the less developed parts of the world, but "civilization?" continues to spread, forcing those remaining pockets of freedom to assimilate into the more controlled "civilized?" world of modern consumer society, wiping out the existence of true, but consensual communism, which has and does work and then trying to implement it upon a vastly greater sized, and loosely associated conglomeration of societies as an imposition.

Perhaps we would all be better off if ALL flags of the world were to be burned, and at the same time we were to discard ALL central governments allowing only the existence of communities where people could live in peace and harmony without oppression by those outside of their communities.

Or a law requiring flags to be made of non-flame retardant material.

Thank you, and IMHO, freedom ONLY exists when the rights of each individual takes precedence over democratically imposed rights by a collective. Rights cannot be given, they can only be taken away.

Some people never grow up. It seems that puberty is occurring at an earlier age than in the past, which may cause maturity to be put off exponentially longer.

"allowed"? People no longer rally around a flag, or any common bond, they now rally around where their provisions are supplied.

it would be much more effective to burn mimeographs of the flag and on the opposite side the page, the issues you're protesting.. idk.. Whole lot easier to produce too.. probably be done on the Simpsons,..:l

You're forgetting that those who are burning flags are doing so because of the fact that they lack verbal communication skills, and therefore have to resort to violence or some acceptable form of violence in order to communicate at all.

As a form of free speech it would be considered to be verbal violence.

Would you feel the same about burning a copy of the Qur'an or a Christian bible?
Actually such acts tell more about the person than it does about their reasoning.

one difference between the book and the flag is this:

people not only live their whole lives by such books, but their afterlives as well

a flag is just a symbol of the place where you were born - does anyone really get up in the morning and think, "what would george washington do?"

besides, of course, yourself . . .

actually I believe that burning a bible or quran is the only proper way to dispose of one that isnt in good enough condition to pass it on to someone else

but really when you think of it ...it is just paper

if people want to express themselves by burning paper thats just fine with me
