This is true. My score is good but the only debt I keep is my mortgage. I hope to have that paid off in 8-9 years.

The sad fact is, it will impact your life at some point. It does not have to be a priority in your life. Unless, that is, you don't follow most peoples life trajectories. I hope you are some iconaclastic person who can live their life with out some faceless bureaucracy impinging your finacial where with all...how cool would that be? I imagine there is a book somewhere there, that you could write. Good luck.

i don't have any credit. i've never needed it, though. i've never held so much as a credit card. i paid cash for everything, paid my bills on time, saved money for emergencies, etc. paying someone money (interest) to spend my own money never made much sense to me.

Even though its good to have good credit,I think far to many people are overly concerned about their own credit score.Part of this is due to the media.Part of it is due to the fact that in the recent "past" it was easy to have good credit. Its alot harder to have good credit now than it was just a few years ago.Any little stupid thing can put a black mark on your credit. And the fact is most people under the age of 60 have poor credit nowadays. So I really could care less about my credit score.

They would not give me one either. But another credit card company gave me a card 100 times better than a walmart card.It just goes to show how stupid and flawed the credit system has become. It's a joke.

Life does seem to run on credit.
Gee whiz, that is why the world is in such a mess right now.
It does not seem to matter what your credit is, just how much companies are willing to bet on you.

I'd like you to expand on you point about the media if you can.

credit reporting agencies are CONSTANTLY airing commercials. i remember thevery first commercial i saw, and we've been inundated with them ever since. people who never gave two squirts about it and were just fine are now living in agony over it, like neighbors fighting for the best lawn in the neighborhood. it's the new beany babies movement.

Very true.I've mentioned the following a number of times on this forum.I think the fact that the US allows prescription drug commercials is UNacceptable.I mean they were banned up until about 9 years ago.--Also commercials from lawyers, credit agencies, every type of low-life outfit were either banned or rarely seen as recently as a few years ago.In Europe the EU was approached by the drug companies and the European Union said NO WAY will we allow you to advertise. Why is the US so backwards in so many things nowadays?

odon you being from the UK you may not realize how much adverts are run in the US making people "overly" worry about credit. Many of these advertisements are done by scam(crooked) companies saying they would help people rebuild credit etc.And the US news media always runs stories about credit that are not accurate but designed to scare people for no valid reason. That is one of 'many' reasons I no longer view US mainstream media.--And I recommend to everyone who lives in countries outside of the US to not rely on or view US media anymore. The US news media used to be great but that was 20+ years ago.

No, I don't know how adverts are run in the US.
I'd hope, even if they are shite and worthless, there is some form of control over there content.
What with all the cable stations, I imagine that is not the case.
Unless it is a major staion, such as CBS et al.

We do have an inordinate amount of adverts about credit and finance, especially during the day.
And we do have companies saying they will "repair" your credit...wich seems a good thing, but, I know they actually can't do a god damn thing. It does worry me.
The biggest worry, though (for me), is generated by actually going out to get "stuff" and being refused...
It is difficult to consider what companies take into account when they use their own standard of credit checks.
One company being different to another.

Well thats the problem there no-longer is any real form of control over the content. There used to be,no longer the case. When big businesses in the US used to be highly regulated it was much better .I hope the new administration goes back to what used to work.A sidenote:In the US they now show about 3 times the amount of commercials during an hour of regular television than was "allowed" 20 years ago.

I'm far too young to remember how long the ad breaks were 20 years ago. I suspect they have increased as the revenue for commercial TV has decreased. That is perhaps why there are so many of these types of adverts on TV. They are cheap to make and the companies can afford to put them on a regular basis. Moral compass points to south.

I suspect Obama will sound like he will do something, then the actuality will be a lot different... a lot like when he said there would be no job cuts at a certain car company...then the boss says there will be.

I think you are right about Obama. As far as adverts if you view an hour televion show made in the US during lets say the 1970s it runs about 50 minutes without commercials.-A newer 1 hour show runs about 35-40 minutes without commercials. You will notice it when watching re-runs of American tv shows, perhaps on the BBC or SKY networks.
