What's wrong with today's youth?

Hey- I celebrate my strangeness!

Nothing wrong with the youth of today that a few of life's hard knocks won't take care of. I think we all have become too soft- too desensitized to what hardship really means. Technology is wonderful- but to fully appreciate it one should be required to live a year or two without it...

There's no need to rely on our friends, neighbors, and even family any more so civility has lost its value- there's no payoff in being nice to your neighbor..

Of course there are exceptions and some of the most remarkable individuals I've encountered are 20 or more years younger than me.

Part of the answer to "what's wrong with today's youth?" rests in the generation and culture that brought them up. My generation's version of Ritalin was verbally administered, "sit down and shut up" and we weren't educated at how to efficiently assume injury at mere words- all we knew was to "sit down and shut up/pay attention" and instead of becoming recipient of ADHD diagnoses the hyperactive kids of yesterday channeled their abundant energies to become the most creative and intelligent among us. They invariably were the ones who stood up and questioned bullshit when the rest of us were willing to sit and play along without question... they taught us to question authority. it's no wonder that the establishment wants them drugged down.

So-- what's wrong with today's youth? Not a fucking thing that we didn't force them into becoming.

 

I agree that the problem is how technology is used. I'm not completely against it it's just that people have become too comfortable with it and slowly replaced normal interaction with it. I'm not really complaining though because I do make alot of effort to meetup with people when possible and get away from living a virtual life. I only have a simple cellphone for example while so many people I know now have an Iphone and an Ipad.

And yea I am guilty of the same thing I am criticizing to some extent but it doesn't mean it was my first choice to socialize so much online. I try more than anyone I know to call up people and try to get everyone together in person but they all say they're not sure or they're busy and later I find out most of the time they just preferred to stay at home watching tv and on the internet then do anything. They all come up with a million excuses. So yes that leaves me no choice but to socialize online. Now that I'm graduating in a month I'm finally saying goodbye to overusing the internet and everything cuz I'm not gonna have anything holding me down to this place I'm at. So I'm gonna roam all around Europe for a few months and enjoy the way Europeans do everything outside.

That's another thing I've noticed. Americans tend to use technology more so than other cultures do. My friends from France and the UK use Facebook for example as kind of a phonebook but dont interact through it very much. While my American friends are always signed on it chatting and posting around and playing games through it.

Amen to that! I was one of those drugged kids in middle and high school. I was mature for my age and everytime I would question authority it was like I was a "problem" child. Mind you I was nothing like that I was actually really smart and in the "gifted" program. Yet these brilliant kids that have new ways of seeing things and need constant stimulation are considered problematic. I was put on so many drugs I could literally not wake up in the morning because I was a zombie. And then I was "problematic" for truancy because I could not physically get up in the morning or stay awake through the day lol. It's horrible the way society tries to find cures for things they don't realize are not problems.

Me myself, I actually found me a good new profession, one very close to heart and mind, with these computers. All of a sudden, you know. And before I did I thought of these things as some absolutely useless stuff for an average man. However, I didn't change my mind about the harmful impact these things have upon humans and human relations.

Human relations become "digitized", the world around you becomes "digitized". The younger generation (except for some who posted here and their likes) don't feel anything wrong, just because they have nothing to compare with.
But it has been reported, that those indulging in all this "twitting", "facebooking", sms-ing and all that usually feel very lonely inside. So much that it is becoming a problem. Another part of the problems is they don't understand the roots of the problem as they "don't seem to be short of friends or communication".
So the harm of these devices here is that they offer an "easy way out" which is actually NOT the way out at all.
Then don't forget, that most part of these gadgets have been designed for this very stuff and nothing else.

Well I know I sound like complaining, I also know I have personal problems (as everyone does), but my observation has been that these gadgets really are effecting the youth for worse and not for better.

Apart from that I find computers and mobile phones to be very useful things and I'm quite excited about what useful things can be done with them.

 

I don't think expressing your opinion is complaining, personally. What we're saying I've also heard from plenty of other people so if that many people are complaining then something must really be wrong lol

I'm about 20 years old. I don't have a facebook. (I'm currently accused of a crime based on a warrant obtained using someone ELSES facebook, with the same name as me, in fact) I don't have a twitter. I do a lot on the internet, I use it all the fucking time, but it doesn't replace my interaction with people I know, it just lets me interact with people i don't know, when I wouldn't have ANY interaction here I live without the internet.

No, I just don't agree. Just as with the war on drugs, the answer is education and open discussion. Right now the discussion is monopolized by two sides: people who hate tech or want to severely limit it, and people who want to use tech to take over your life, like mark zuckerberg. Both of these sides have it totally wrong, FUCK them both. You can use tech heavily and have a balanced life, but selling you THAT idea wouldn't make any monies or defend any values.

So.... No, I think you're wrong. Anyone who gives up interaction is choosing to do so, and it's not some crime against culture that they have the option to.

And while I personally enjoy human contact within reason, sometimes I'd rather be alone with my computer. And so fuck WHAT? What business is it of yours, or anyone elses? Who's to say that I should interact in person? I have plenty of interaction with the world at large, I'm a fucking blacksmith, I love mountain biking, I love rock climbing. But I also love my computer. How do you propose to say that I only like digitized life because I have no comparison?

As the internet becomes more restrictive and censored, and as ISP's start really fucking with people about bandwidth and shit, as the very idea of net neutrality gets shat on even more, I suppose I will end up being more and more on the "fringe" of the internet, but I'll ride this pirateship down to the bottom of the sea before me cold, dead hands let go of me keyboard.

i know lots of kids who are changing the world in a huge way, kids who are really motivated to be an incredible powerful force... kids who have a HUGE DEDICATION to MAKING THINGS HAPPEN...
i know tons of high-school kids who make everybody else look bad because they are so focused and dedicated......! they are doing shit that is fucking unreal... like starting major companies and shit... it is crazy......

Just smoke a bowl and watch that fuckin' thing for like 10 minutes. Isn't it disgusting? I will never in my life be able to fathom that amount of money. Like what is the youth supposed to do with this? How can we be expected to make things work? And even more difficult, make them work peacefully?

Er... I'm not meant to do anything with it, nor did I say I planned on it. I never said I owned any of it, or have anything to do with the government.

Being I have nothing to do with it, and owe it no money, I don't like that I'll be associated with a bad debt. Which I had nothing to do with in the first place. But my generation is going to have to bear its burdens. When whomever the country owes comes to collect, I'm going to be viewed in the same light as those that are actually responsible for it.

In the same subject as the beginning of the thread, Its hard to rebel against something that is as large as our government unless the numbers are very very large. Its also hard to imagine them taking us seriously when they are too busy worrying about numbers like that.

The problems with TODAYS youth is not TODAYS youths problem . As much as I hate to say it todays youth are a product of yesterdays youth . And on and on backwards down the generational chain back to the sixties . That's were it began to go wrong in America . That's where the selfish attitudes of do what feels good , or what's right for you began . And all this psychology bullshit with a ready quick made up label ,and much of what is just another excuse to not take personal responsibility . This stuff had devastating consequences on American culture .

Today we teach these children they will never lose or fail . We teach these kids they can do whatever they want no matter how destructive it is to themselves . We teach them to take no personal responsibility for their actions .We have taught these children absolutely NO discipline , no respect for self or others , no values and selfishness . Hell we don't even parent or raise them anymore , the media does ! It's not their fault it's our fault ! When we began to say stupid things like my child is going to have better than I did . It was a breeding ground for material possessions and sense of entitlement to make spoiled brats with no sense of reality , and ungrateful disconnected , selfish people .

And even with that there are still some pretty great kids out there who excel and do great things and help others , that some how managed to raise themselves to be decent people who see this bullshit society for what it is . Some of these kids are so smart and wise beyond there years it amazes me . We are just living in and seeing the chronically ill end result and progression of a declining empire and society in it's last days on the verge of collapse . Whose economic and moral base has eroded to literal shit . No society can or will stand with such destructive negative principals built as its base as , greed , apathy and selfishness . But the kids today didn't create this , we did ! They are just living in the aftermath of our bad choices . And now all the chickens have come home to roost , because now no one recognizes or understands this new society and how dysfunctional it has become . How do we even begin to fix it ? No , the kids are not alright and neither are we .

The start is we must , must , take control of the mass media and begin to get back to common sense . We must end this bullshit bi-party rich corporate controlled and owned government . We MUST see this tyranny of both these parties for what they are big business sell out to the rich elite ! We have got to stop labeling things as left and right and stop letting petty differences or special minority agendas divide us and demoralize us so nothing gets done or fixed , except the will of the rich elite ! As long as they OWN both parties and keep us at the bottom divided by race , politics, religions , sex , union / nonunion , or whatever . We lose and they win . THE COUNTRY HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO BECOME THIS WAY , BECAUSE WE THE MIDDLE AND LOWER CLASS CAN NOT STAND UNITED AS ONE WITH ONE VOICE ! To say enough of this bullshit ! We must begin to think as Americans first and our special interests second . We must build a new platform , a new agenda , new grass roots movements and have a real viable third party choice , and not just some pipe dream wasted vote nonsense ! Most Americans are in between left and right , and have no "real" party to represent their interests . The middle class has been shut out , and systematically destroyed by rich elite class warfare . We need and must have a real American middle class party . We must realize that when America does fall what ever special interest or minority movement we pushed so hard for will be crushed and doomed . After all it's American liberty bought and paid for in blood and sacrifice that allows us free speech to even have such platforms . We are and should be American's first and everything else second .

I think we also must stop labeling intelligent people as nuts, crazy , conspiracy theorists , crackpots and tin foil hat wearers .Sure some are , but Many of these people are extremely intelligent and right on the money about what's really going on . They have been trying to sound the alarm bell for a very long time , yet most never hear the alarm because said people are dismissed as nuts . The federal reserve, I.M.F. and world banks MUST BE CRUSHED AND STOPPED ! Or all is lost . It's not hard to figure out what went wrong in America and the world . The problem is we are WAY past an easy , painless , bloodless fixes to said problems . Now it's going to be hard and difficult and nasty to fix . And we have allowed ourselves to become weak , soft and take the path of less resistance . We have let ourselves become to Dependant on the man and the system ! That's why were not seeing mass protests , movements and challanges to the powers that be . However it's inevitable , the day is quickly approaching when we can no longer keep our head in the sand , and we will have to choose a side and stand and fight . It's my guess this will happen when people will no longer be able to, or afford to feed themselves . And when the economy really tanks thanks to the sell out piece by piece of our industrial and manufacturing base , by the very people we " elect" to represent us , who in fact only represent themselves and their wallets . However thanks to the mass media spins are never held accountable to their constituents . The day is quickly approaching when pensions , social security, will begin to fall . And funding for programs like welfare and unemployment will stop . It's coming and soon !

In response to Papa Wolf. One of the most dangerous illusions that has been accepted as reality is independence. Think about it the mantra of the United States seems to be independence. Yet that implies that our actions have no consequences. Yet all of our actions have consequences right down to when we decide to breath.

The fact of the matter is that the structure that we look at and call power and wealth is simply a pyramid. The people at the top level suffer under the delusion of independence and attempt to choke out the bottom layers. Through this action they are the architects of their own demise. Once the levels under them move it will collapse. The levels don't even have to move in the same direction.

There is an upside do the economic downturn. It is forcing people to scale back their lifestyles. The basic principles of capitalism are goods and services, and supply and demand. The ones at the top are there because they control goods and services and put the price on their goods and services. They control the supplies of their goods and services but they don't control the demand. As people have less "Disposable Income" they have to scale back their lifestyle thus decreasing the demand for the goods and services that the top provides that keep them at the top. By attempting to starve out the bottom to stay on top they are jeopardizing their position at the top.

Or for that matter, THEIR parents?

I think that because no one knew what was coming, parenting has consistantly lagged behind society and tech since about WWI, and THAT's the problem.

At some point things will slow down, parenting will catch up, and things will get better....

I have a lot more than that to say on this, but drugs are currently preventing me from doing so. Maybe later.

 

Honestly I think that everyone is so fucking fed up with the US governments bullshit that they have given up on their country. I personally can't wait to save up enough money to move the fuck out of this shitty ass country.

 

Leaving doesn't fix anything. The US has it's hand in the whole world, you can't run, you can't hide.

We've got to fix what we've got. We can do it.
